Will a good HEI be good enough for a 604 or is it a must to have the whole msd setup. Thanks

A GOOD HEI will work just install a better coil...forget the china crap

You want to run the timing locked, and you need to have a rev limiter. So you can use a good locked HEI to trigger a MSD 6ALN. You DON'T use the module in the HEI. You need MSD part #8861. A good internal coil for an HEI, don't know of one. The China HEI's and Summit brand dizzy's are JUNK. Lay out the buck now...or do it later cause your having problems. A MSD 85551 dizzy, a MSD 6ALN box, a MSD 8251 coil, and a set of good Moroso wires. If you want cheap, take the dizzy and wires off a caprice in a junk yard.

HEI distributors are very simple and clean to install (1 wire) so they do have some attraction to anyone looking at an ignition system

1 of the biggest downsides to HEI ignitions is exactly what Krooser was talking about----
there are a lot of very poor products on the market when it comes to HEI ignitions
we use MSD 8365 pro billet and yes we do recommend locking the advance-----in this model it is very easy and positive and also puts the rotor in nearly perfect phase

one thing to keep in mind with any HEI ignition-- they are very dependent on primary voltage and amperage
12 volt systems will be much happier with an alternator
ALL wiring for the ignition should be a minimum of #12 wire with good connections and switches
