I was on a 7.12 with a 358 flat tappet nlms motor with spec brodix aluminum 23* heads. Turned 85-8700.

I ran a 6.86 in a mod. I had a good full roller 355, turned it 8200

The flat tappet turning 8700 sounds like a great idea. I know the cup guys used to use the cams with the hard face overlay welded in and some super expensive lifters to pull that off. Do 23 degree heads even make power at 8700 ??

It was only a split second I figured. I wanted it to launch off the corners so I hung a gear in it.
