Skylar Marlar Scores Schaeffer’s Iron-Man Late Model Harold Hardgrove Memorial Win at Lake Cumberland Speedway

By Michael Despain

BURNSIDE, KY – September 30, 2017 – The Schaeffer’s Oil Iron-Man Championship Late Model Series would make its first-ever appearance at Lake Cumberland Speedway in Burnside, KY for the Harold Hardgrove Memorial on Saturday evening and Skylar Marlar of Winfield, TN would claim the $3,522 payday. The Brucebilt Performance Iron-Man Modified Series would also be in competition and Tommy Bailey of Corbin, KY would score a $1,022 victory.

Marlar’s victory in the Schaeffer’s Oil Iron-Man Championship Late Model Series main event would make the thirteenth different winners in thirteen events so far this season for the tour and the win for Marlar would come aboard the Jesse Puckett owned Picker’s Paradise/Puckett Automotive/MAC Metals sponsored #88 Club 29 Race Car. Bailey’s victory in the Brucebilt Performance Modified Series main event would come in the Berneil Mills owned Mills Auto/G and M Oil/Tommy’s Automotive Repair/Dependable Auto Repair sponsored #20 Lightning Chassis entry and also see Bailey claim the $200 bounty on series points leader Shon Flanary, who had won four consecutive series events.

Tommy Bailey would race to the lead at the start of the 35-lap, $3,522 to win Harold Hardgrove Memorial Super Late Model main event, with Steve Stollings, Brian Smith, Skylar Marlar, and Cody Mahoney giving chase. Steve Elliott would spin his machine on lap two to halt the action in the early going and once action resumed, Bailey would maintain the lead, while Smith would take second from Stollings on lap three, with Marlar now pressuring Stollings for the third position until finally making the pass for the positon on lap six. Bailey would start working traffic on lap nine and Mahoney would work past Stollings for the fourth spot on the same circuit. Caution would wave again on lap ten when Jeff Watson would slow on the backchute with a broken rear-end on his mount. Bailey would bring the field back to green on the restart, with Marlar working past Smith for second as the field completed the tenth circuit. Lap twelve would see a three-wide battle for fifth involving Stollings, Kenny Collins, and Greg Johnson, with Johnson going from seventh to fifth on that lap. Bailey would start working traffic again on lap sixteen and the caution would wave for the third time in the contest when Elliott would draw his second caution when his mounted slowed entering turn three. Bailey and Marlar would scoot away from the field on the restart, while Mahoney would race past Smith for third on lap twenty-one as the lead duo of Bailey and Marlar entered slower traffic on lap twenty-two. Marlar would pressure Bailey for the top spot and Marlar would take the lead on lap twenty-six, only to have Bailey reclaim the top position one trip later as the pair would now battle in heavy traffic, allowing Mahoney to close on the pair from his third spot. Marlar would make his move again and make what would turn out to be the winning pass of Bailey on lap thirty-two, with Mahoney also able to work Bailey for second on the same circuit. The final caution of the race flew on lap thirty-four as Ricky Tinch spun his machine in turn four to set up a green/white/checkered flag finish. However, Marlar would not be denied and take the checkered flag first, with Mahoney taking second position, with Bailey settling for a third-place finish. Victor Lee would make a charge on the final restart to finish fourth, while Smith completed the top five. The remainder of the top ten would be Johnson, Collins, Kody Evans, nineteenth-place starting Johnny Wheeler, and Stollings.

Tommy Bailey would jump to the lead at the start of the 20-lap, $1,022 to win Brucebilt Performance Iron-Man Modified Series feature contest and would survive a pair of late race cautions that also set up a green/white/checkered flag finish scenario and take the victory. Jimmy Payne and Peyton Harlow would work past on the final restart, with Payne taking runner-up honors, while Harlow would claim third. Shon Flanary would finish fourth, with Jeff Watson completing the top five in fifth. The remainder of the top ten finishers would Dennis Roberson, Zach Powers, Ben Petrey, Keith Denny, and Gerald Haynes, Jr.

The Schaeffer’s Oil Iron-Man Championship Late Model Series next event will be Saturday October 7 at 201 Speedway in Sitka, KY, paying $3,000 to win the Paul Salyer Memorial.

The Brucebilt Performance Iron-Man Modified Series next event will be on Friday October 13 and Saturday October 14 at Ponderosa Speedway in Junction City, KY as part of the track’s 27th Annual Fall Classic, paying $2,000 to win.
