when using a Toyota r22 to rebuild my bert type reverse mt. starter do I need to do any thing to the drive gear on the r22 ?

no, other than welding it to the shaft.
is the starter you purchased have the big motor on it?
does it look like the Bert unit?
If the same I would fix up the new one to use and be done with it.

has a big motor. is alittle different than the powerhouse. why weld it?

If you don’t it will slide backwards on the splines and not engage the countershaft gear into the flywheel

Think it may depend on what bell he is using. The brinn engages off the nose of the starter gear and the bert uses the back of the starter gear some starters you have to weld a washer to the back of the gear/shaft because it is just straight and won't kick the idler out.

but you still have to weld the gear on, or it will slide back the splines

Yeah the welding is key, solves a lot of issues, shimming the ring gear etc.
