EASTABOGA, AL – Three-time NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series National champion Ronnie Johnson of Chattanooga, TN earned the pole position for Sunday’s 27th Annual Ice Bowl $3,000-to-win main event for the NeSmith Late Models. Johnson drove the Josh Roberts Trucking Special to a win in the first ten-lap heat race to earn the inside front row starting spot.
The National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame Inductee started off the day on Saturday by earning fast time honors in Qualifying among the 36 entrants with a lap around Talladega Short Track in 14.692 seconds. That gave Johnson the pole position for the first of four ten-lap heat races that saw the top four finishers in each heat transfer to Sunday afternoon’s main event.
Sam Seawright of Fort Payne, AL won the second heat race in the J&R Lumber Special and will start the big show on Sunday from the outside of the front row. Jesse Lowe of Crossville, TN drove the CVR Race Cars "House Car” to victory in the third heat race, and starts the main event from the inside of the second row. Jimmy Elliott of Cleveland, TN won the fourth heat race and will start the Mighty Muffler and Brake Center Special on the outside of the second row.
Following the Chattanooga Flash into the Big Show out of the first heat on Saturday were Michael Page of Douglasville, GA, Andy Picklesimer of Ooltewah, TN, and Dylan Knowles of Lanett, AL. Second through fourth respectively in the second heat were Cruz Skinner of Oxford, AL, Brad Berry of Attala, AL, and Jadon Frame of Winchester, TN.
Finishing in second through fourth behind Lowe in the third heat were Shane Smith of Fruithurst, AL, Drew Kennedy of Wartburg, TN, and Clay Harris of Jupiter, FL. Following Elliott out of the fourth heat in second through fourth respectively were Heath Carr of Ashland, AL, Jason Britton of Alexander City, AL, and Zack Shannon of Wartburg, TN.
Drivers that finished fifth through ninth in the four heat races will have another opportunity to try and make the field of 24 for the 27th Annual Ice Bowl on Sunday through one of two B-Main Races.
The 27th Annual Ice Bowl is the first race of the 3rd Annual RockAuto.com Winter Shootout, an eight-race special series that will be contested at four different race track through March for the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series. The 2018 NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series National Tour will open its 14th season in April.
