Screven Motor Speedway’s Winter Freeze Set to Open Season for 3 Touring Series

Sylvania, Georgia (Monday, January 22, 2018) – Screven Motor Speedway will lift the lid on its 2018 racing season in grand fashion with Winter Freeze VIII which is set for February 8-10 at the 1/3rd mile red clay oval just outside of Sylvania, Georgia on GA Highway 21. The mega event will serve as the season opener for 3 different touring series and will see nearly $300,000 in purse money distributed. The event is headlined for the 7th time by the Craftsman World of Outlaw Late Model Series which will compete in an $8,000 to win feature on Friday night and a $10,000 to win feature on Saturday night.

Several drivers who have victories at Screven and call the southeast region home will look to contend for the Craftsman World of Outlaws Late Model Series championship in 2018. Shane Clanton of Zebulon, Georgia has been a WoO regular for several years and leads all WoO competitors in victories with 4. Gray Court, South Carolina’s Chris Madden will embark on his second season chasing the WoO title. Madden captured his 1st 2017 triumph at Winter Freeze VII.

Brandon Overton is definitely no stranger to Screven Motor Speedway. The popular driver from Evans, Georgia has picked up multiple wins in different divisions over his career. And finally Chris Ferguson of Mt. Holly, North Carolina will open his 2018 campaign for WoO Rookie of the Year and the championship at Winter Freeze. Ferguson has been strong at Screven the last few years with 2 wins to his credit and having led several laps in the WoO season opener last year.

Screven will also play host to the FASTRAK Racing Series for a pair of feature events. The popular southeast series which features dirt late models powered by GM Performance sealed “crate” engines will vie for a $2000 winner’s purse on Friday. Saturday will see those same drivers compete for a $3000 winner’s share. Look for drivers like reigning FASTRAK Touring champion Benji Hicks, perennial favorite David Smith, multi-time Screven winner Travis Pennington and local favorites like Chesley Dixon and Jordy Nipper among a strong list of entrants.

Also on the card for Winter Freeze VIII is the $13,000 to win SCDRA Renegade 4 Battle Royale. For the 9th time in as many years track owner / promoter James “Redd” Griffin brings the Front Wheel Drive racers their richest event in the world. Along with the $13,000 winner prize Griffin also offers a $2000 bonus of the fastest overall driver chooses to tag the tail of the 44 car feature and is able to pick up the win. A $1000 bonus is offered to the 2nd fastest overall car if they opt to start from the rear and pick up the win. The event regularly draws close to 100 entries from all over the US and Canada. Defending event winner Andrew Smith will look for his 6th win in the event while SCDRA champion Eric Boozel, Dennis Adkins, Alan Carter, Shannon Barnhill, Eddie McGrew, Casey Shane, Brian Balcom and a host of others will look for their first win in the “big one”.

The Sharp Mini Late Models will also be in action Friday and Saturday with a pair of feature events. These cars are scale versions of dirt late models which are powered by a 600cc motorcycle engine. The cars are lightweight and very fast. Also in action will be the Super Street Division on Friday night vying a $1000 to win purse and on Saturday night the Street Stock V-8 class will go after a $1000 to win purse as well.

Tickets are available at the gate only. Thursday will feature open practice in all divisions. Gates will open at 4 PM Thursday. Friday all gates open at 9 AM and on Saturday all gates open at 8 AM.
