takes way to much power to turn the generator in a magneto. with the better and higher voltage batteries nowadays and better coils sparks are still strong at the end of a long race. that and ignorant chevrolet has a big enough problem with distributor turning in the block without trying to pull a magneto.

Mags were not real reliable. you had to have 3 of them. 1 in the car, 1 in the trailer for spare, and 1 sent out for repair/recharge. Peak power of a motor will be the same with either a mag or MSD but MSD ignition will start easier(especially on alcohol) and be cleaner on restarts.

Only thing I ever had against them was the need to kill battery and ground them out to kill the engine.

Magnetos generally run a spark plug gap of .022 while MSD ignition boxes allow much larger gap.I run .040 with my engines.

I never ran one, but don't you have to remove them if welding on the chassis? Seems like that would be a pain.

Don't Sprint cars run them still?

Yes but they don't have batteries or starters.
