July’s Butch Shay Memorial weekend at Richmond Raceway to feature $36,760 in prize money
Carnesville, GA – Fireworks and sparks will fly when the ULTIMATE Battle of the Bluegrass Super Late Model Series heads to Richmond Raceway in Richmond, Kentucky July 6th and 7th for two complete shows. Drivers will compete for their share of $36,760 as part of the fourth Butch Shay Memorial at the track known as the “Beast of the East”. Friday’s “Prelude to the Butch Shat Memorial” will pay $3,000 to win and $400 to start and Saturday’s “Butch Shay Memorial” will pay $5,000 to win and $400 to start. Additionally, the ULTIMATE Battle of the Bluegrass is offering up a $1,000 points fund for the weekend, with the driver with the highest point total across the two nights receiving $500.
Butch Shay was inducted into the National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame in 2015 and into the Kentucky Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2016. The Louisville, KY native began his racing career in 1963 and concluded it 51 years later in 2013. Shay raced in six decades and through the evolution of dirt late models. Richmond Raceway was one of Shay’s favorite tracks, as he competed on the local and regional level.
Richmond Raceway will be operating under new ownership and management in 2018. Bill Lupinos purchased the storied facility with plans to put it back on the map. Lupinos and his family relocated from Seattle, Washington and quickly got to work. They have already made noticeable improvements to the facility, with plans to begin work on the racing surface early next week.
"Our goal is to make this a place families and race teams want to come to,” said Lupinos, “we want to make Richmond great again.”
