Ponderosa Speedway Returns to Action with Iron-Man Series Pete Abell Memorial $5,000 to win Friday June 22

JUNCTION CITY, KENTUCKY- June 4, 2018- Ponderosa Speedway will return to action with its next scheduled event on Friday June 22 as the track will present the 21st Annual Pete Abell Memorial, that will feature the Schaeffer’s Oil Iron-Man Championship Late Model Series presented by DirtonDirt.com in competition for $5,000 to win, along with the first 2018 appearance for Open Wheel Modifieds as the Brucebilt Performance Iron-Man Modifieds will race for $1,000 to win. The Crate Late Models, KDRA Super Stocks, KDRA Four Cylinders, and Mini-Cup/Cyclones will also be in competition at this event.

Of note, the practice that was originally listed on the schedule for Friday June 15 has been cancelled due to a conflict with another event that has been rescheduled due to a rainout at another local area track.

The 21st Annual Pete Abell Memorial event will take place on Friday June 22 and will feature the Schaeffer’s Oil Iron-Man Championship Late Model Series presented by DirtonDirt.com in competition in a full program of racing action, with the Super Late Model feature winner claiming $5,000 in the 40 lap main event. Also, the Brucebilt Performance Iron-Man Modified Series will visit Ponderosa Speedway as part of the 21st Annual Pete Abell Memorial event and will race 20 laps for $1,000 to win. Also, the track’s Crate Late Models will race for 20 laps for $800 to win, with the KDRA Super Stocks in action for 15 laps for $500 to win, KDRA Four Cylinders will compete 15 laps for $400 to win, and Mini-Cup/Cyclones will be racing 10 laps for $100 to win.

The Super Late Model portion of the program will be sanctioned by the Schaeffer’s Oil Iron-Man Championship Late Model Series presented by DirtonDirt.com and will feature the following tire rules: Hoosier 1350 or 1600 and American Racer 48 or 56. The Super Late Model entry fee is $50 and random tire samples will be taken by the series.

The Open Wheel Modified portion of the program will be sanctioned by the Brucebilt Performance Iron-Man Modified Series and will feature the following tire rules: Hoosier M30 or M60 and American Racer Hard and Extra Hard. The Hoosier M60 and American Racer Extra Hard can be used as a right rear option and all tires can be siped, but no grooving of any tire is allowed. The Open Wheel Modified entry fee is $25 and random tire samples will be taken by the series.

There is no entry fee for the support classes of the Crate Late Models, KDRA Super Stocks, and KDRA Four Cylinders and rules for these divisions can be found on the track’s webpage. Drivers competing the Crate Late Models, KDRA Super Stock, and KDRA Four Cylinder divisions that do not make the 18-car starting field in their respective divisions will receive $35 tow money. The track uses transponder timing/scoring in all divisions and transponder rental for the support divisions for this event will be $10. Also of note, there will be an additional $100 to winner of the KDRA Super Stock feature and KDRA Four Cylinder if either division has 18 or more entries.

The Pete Abell Memorial event is held in memory of former Central Kentucky racer Pete Abell, who raced for many years at Ponderosa Speedway, along with competing at other area race tracks. Darrell Lanigan would win the inaugural event in 1995, while chassis builder C.J. Rayburn of Whiteland, IN would take the win in 1996, while Lanigan would return to victory lane in the 1997. Don O'Neal of Martinsville, IN would take the race win in 1998, while Scott James of Lawrenceburg, IN won the race in 1999, with Timmy Yeager of Harrodsburg, KY picking up the win in 2000. Mike Jewell of Scottsburg, IN would take the win in 2001, while the event would not be held in 2002, with Johnny Wheeler of Campbellsville, KY won the race in 2003. The event would be cancelled due to weather in 2004, but returned in 2005 with Steve Hillard of Sadorus, IL taking the win, followed in 2006 with a win by Chris Combs of Isom, KY, while Aaron Hatton of Mount Sterling, KY took the victory in 2007. Victor Lee of Danville, KY won the 2008 contest, while Mike Marlar of Winfield, TN would take the win in 2009, with Justin Rattliff of Campbellsville, KY becoming only the second repeat winner in the event's history by taking back-to-back wins in the race in 2010 and 2011. Dustin Neat of Dunnville, KY won the event in 2012, while the event was not contested in 2013. Victor Lee would become the third two-time winner of the event with his victory in the 2014 race, with Dustin Linville of Bryantsville, KY scoring the victory in the 2015 contest. Cody Mahoney of Hanover, IN would become the first driver from the Hoosier state since 2001 to claim a victory in the race with his 2016 triumph. The Schaeffer’s Oil Iron-Man Championship Late Model Series sanctioned the 2017 edition of the Pete Abell Memorial and Hudson O’Neal of Martinsville, IN was victorious, claiming the victory over Michael Chilton, Tripp Gerrald, Brandon Kinzer, and Stephen Breeding.

In addition to stock car racing activities, the track also plans to have a randow drawing for a bicycle give away to a young race fan during intermission courtesy of Allen Tilley’s Broken Spoke Bicycle Shop in Somerset, KY.

Activities for the 21st Annual Pete Abell Memorial event at Ponderosa Speedway on Friday June 22 will the pit area open at 3:00 p.m., while the general admission area will open at 5:00 p.m. The drivers meeting will take place at 7:00 p.m., with practice laps set to begin at 7:30 p.m. Ticket prices for the Pete Abell Memorial event on Friday June 22 in the general admission area will be $23 for adults, $15 for young adults ages 13-16, while children ages 12 and under will be free. In the pit area, a pit pass for adults will be $35, with young adults ages 11-16 being $20, while children ages 10 and under are free with a signed parent waiver.
