Finn Watson Memorial for Iron-Man Late Models, Iron-Man Modifieds at Lake Cumberland Speedway Saturday June 30

SOMERSET, KY – June 25, 2018 – The Schaeffer’s Oil Iron-Man Championship Late Model Series presented by DirtonDirt.com and Brucebilt Performance Iron-Man Modified Series will invade Lake Cumberland Speedway in Burnside, KY on Saturday June 30 for the 4th Annual Finn Watson Memorial event, with the Iron-Man Late Models competing for $3,000 to win and Iron-Man Modifieds in action for $1,000 to win.

Lake Cumberland Speedway will host the Schaeffer’s Oil Iron-Man Championship Late Model Series presented by DirtonDirt.com on Saturday June 30 for the 4th Annual Finn Watson Memorial event as Super Late Model competitors will race for $3,000 to win and $300 to start. The Brucebilt Performance Iron-Man Modified Series will also be in competition at Lake Cumberland Speedway on Saturday June 30, racing for $1,000 to win. Other divisions in action at Lake Cumberland Speedway on Saturday June 30 will be the KDRA Super Stocks racing for $600 to win and KDRA Four Cylinders racing for $400 to win. Activities at Lake Cumberland Speedway on Saturday June 30 will the pit area will open at 3:00 p.m, with the general admission area opening at 5:00 p.m. The drivers meeting will be at 6:45 p.m., with practice laps set to begin at 7:00 p.m., followed by time trials and green flag racing. Ticket prices at Lake Cumberland Speedway on Saturday June 30 in the general admission area will be $20 for adults, while a pit pass will be $35. In addition, there will be a huge fireworks display at intermission for everyone in attendance as well.

The Super Late Model portion of the program will be sanctioned by the Schaeffer’s Oil Iron-Man Championship Late Model Series. The entry fee will be $50, plus transponder rental for timing/scoring purposes. The Super Late Model tire rule will be as follows: Hoosier 1350, 1600, and LM40; American Racer 48 and 56 on all four corners of the race cars. Random tire samples will be taken by the series. Drivers not making the feature event will receive $50 tow money.

The Brucebilt Performance Iron-Man Slicker Graphics Modified Series will sanction the Open Wheel Modified portion of the program. The entry fee will be $25, plus transponder rental for timing/scoring purposes. The Open Wheel Modified tire rule will be as follows: Hoosier M30 or M60 and American Racer Hard and Extra Hard. The Hoosier M60 and American Racer Extra Hard can be used as an option on the right rear of the cars and all tires can be siped, but no grooving of any tire is allowed. Random tire samples will be taken by the series. Drivers not making the feature event will receive $25 tow money.

The event honors the memory of former Central Kentucky Dirt Late Model driver Finn Watson of Campbellsville, KY. Watson passed away in April of 2013 after a storied racing career that spanned a total of 38 years and saw him amass over 300 career feature wins over the course of his illustrious career, including a 12th place finish in the 1976 World 100 driving for car owner Bobby Paul of Danville, KY, won the 1981 Mello Yello 81 at Taylor County Speedway in Campbellsville, KY, won a NDRA Invitational Qualifier event at Taylor County Speedway in 1985 in a photo-finish over the late Wayne Coakley, and won 13 events in 17 starts also driving for Mr. Paul in that 1985 season. Watson would finish third in the 1986 Lake Cumberland Classic to Jeff Purvis and Jack Boggs driving for Speck Parsons of London, KY and was the 1989 UMP Gold Series champion driving for the Hinkle Brothers of London, KY. Watson was a former Super Late Model track champion at Richmond Raceway in Richmond, KY and was also named Driver of the Year on multiple occasions at Taylor County Speedway, while also winning several feature events at Lake Cumberland Speedway. Some other notable car owners that Watson drove cars to victory lane for over the course of his career include Chester Nichols and Hugh “Junebug” Rowland of Danville, KY, Mickey Williams of Russell Springs, KY, Chubby Baird of Liberty, KY, Alvin Hartwick of Monticello, KY, C.J. Rayburn of Whiteland, IN, Danny Cox of Danville, KY, Jimmy Cundiff of Shepherdsville, KY, the Hinkle Brothers of London, KY, the Hatcher Family of Campbellsville, KY, and Gary Craig of Monticello, KY. Watson’s son, Jeff, continues to race in both the Super Late Model and Modified divisions at many tracks around the area. Victor Lee of Danville, KY was victorious in the inaugural event in 2015, with Greg Johnson of Bedford, IN taking the win in the race in 2016. Jackie Boggs of Grayson, KY would claim the victory in the 2017 Finn Watson Memorial event.
