I’ve said it many of times in similar threads such as this one, but one of if not the coolest nicknames I’ve heard is “the wheelman” Johnny Wheeler. The name fit him to a T because he could wheel the heck out of a car. RIP he was one of the good guys.

I grew up with many drivers sporting a nickname of a favorite cartoon character and having that image displyed on their cars... fun times.

Miles "The Mouse" Melius, Don "The Dog" Schuppel, Fuzzy "The Hound" Fassbender, Pedro Roehl "Speedy Gonzalez" and so many more. The kids loved that stuff...

The Headknocker is Petey Ivey.

Yes, in the Carolinas, he was a local driver known by this nickname. There was also, Billy "The Nightstalker" Bishop, and one of my childhood favorites "Hot Rod" Lamance. Hot Rod was so often referred to by his nickname that many fans didn't even know his real name which was Steve Lamance. There was also the nationally known Flinstone Flyer, Mike Duvall, who sadly passed on last year. Also, I remember occasionally hearing Buck Simmons referred to as 'The Buckaroo".

Speaking of The Flintstone Flyer, it would be nice to see some sort of brief tribute to him at this years World 100, since he is a past winner of the event.

They are terrible. It's embarrassing.

And "the Sheppard leads his flock to the promised land"...……...I don't even like typing those words. He may be the nicest guy on the planet, but I'd rather listen to Larry Flynt announce races.

I believe he may have been the only guy that used his nickname as his number. ?

Mike's Flinstone Flyer was certainly cool, but I don't think he was the only one to do this. For example, Hot Rod Lmance, which I previously mentioned, many times ran the number 8 with the top half of the 8 being the "o" in the word "Hot" and the bottom half being the "o" in the word "Rod". You can see his car in this youtube video.

https://youtu.be/phORLTyY4qM

I believe that year he went on to win the track championship at both Cherokee and Riverside (Now known as Travelers Rest) with a 358 clements Ford under the hood, the little motor that could and did! Anyway, I'm sure there were many others who used their nicknames as numbers also, like the Nightstalker, who only had "Nightstalker" on the side of his cars.

As for other classes, I don't know if anyone has mentioned "The Wild Child" in sprintcars yet.

On a tangent, but still racing nicknames, Drag racing has had it's share as well with "Big Daddy", "Cha Cha", "Ace", "the Proffesor", "Grumpy", "The Golden Greek" , and "Tricky Ricky". And of course who could forget Don "The Snake" prudhomme and Tom "The Mongosse" Mcewen. Sadly, we lost "The Mongosse" earlier this year. To learn the history of their friendly rivalry, partnership, and Hotwhells sponsorship deal check out the movie "Snake and Mongosse".

One lesser known, mostly regional drag racer, was Pro modified driver, Tommy Gray. With his family being in the funeral home business, he decide to use the nickname "undertaker". He would sometimes even dress his crew members to fit the part as the Grim reaper complete with prop sickles and coffins they would emerge from.

I guess you're right. I haven't been there since the late 80s/early 90s. Also, in looking baack, it may have been 91 when Hot Rod Lamance won the track championship at both riverside and Cherokee.

I went to riverside for the last race.....next morning on the way home I went to the then closed travelers rest track.....hopped the gate and wandered around the track , took some pictures and just pondered what was and what could be.

Went back to the track and Walked around riverside that morning taking pictures before we left also , was kind of a sad day for racing in that area .....glad travelers rest is reopened.

Sounds goofy, but that last walk around the riverside property was pretty cool....could feel the history, still hear the cars but all that was left was a stiff breeze , blowing last nights hot dog wrappers all around.

I'm sure some of the locals in that area could tell you some great stories about riverside.....
