Can we officially take this race out of crown jewels? The race seems to get rained out a lot and then becomes a train race on sunday.

I think it’s the least interesting “crown jewel” to start with.

The rain they were expecting showed up about an hour ago. With the rain that is expected over the next few days, I am glad they called it early. Hopefully they can reschedule it.

Penn23, for those of us that live in Arkansas and support the track will always see this as a Crown Jewel race. You may think its a lack luster race, well come on down and I'll show you that you are wrong.

Hard to believe that part of the country having so much rain. Its always been hot and dry in that area this time of year. The climate has changed.

We have had at least one really big rain in August for several years now regardless of how wet or dry the Summer is,but the the last few Summers have definitely been very wet. It used to be that the grass would be brown and crispy by now if you had not watered.

This race does seem to struggle with weather every year, I think even the bad boy has dealt with the same issues in its couple years of existence. I kinda look forward to this race every year. Some people may not be a fan of it, but i like seeing the cars topless. It's different from all of the other money just for that simple reason. It may not have the luster it used to have, but its still one a lot of guys would like to make or win at some point in their career.

Not surprised they cancelled though. The forecast for there doesn't look good. Call it off, and let those boys go race somewhere else, or chill at the crib.

Run it Wednesday night... should be dry enough to get the haulers in and out and maybe the track would still have some moisture in it....

According to http://droughtmonitor.unl.edu/CurrentMap/StateDroughtMonitor.aspx?South, Arkansas is mostly in a MODERATE DROUGHT, at this time.

I'm right in that swath across lower Arkansas with no drought. I have seen other places in the state where it seems.to be very dry with brown looking grass,etc....
We got 15 inches of rain in one week back in February.

The "topless" really doesn't make sense without side boards. Did it not begin as a wedge car race, or perhaps "mini wedge" with side boards? That's the way I remember it. Anyway, what's the point of running it topless without side boards? I say, to make the topless truly unique, bring back the side boards and mini-wedge bodies, not the huge barely fit under the flagstand side boards, the smaller from rear of drivers compartment back side boards.

The main reason the SLM run topless is for the fans to actually see the driver and how he interacts with the race car.

Zooming in closer on that map,I see that where we are is still in a drought. We had a 5 inch soaking rain last week with more this week. I think the lack of soaking rain is the issue in the state. Arkansas weather truly is strange and unpredictable these days.

Nope. That's just their excuse. This did use to be a wedge car race. I didn't attend it back then as I was just a kid and it wasn't in my local area, but I saw the ads for it in the Racing News, the little weekly racing newspaper that I got in the mail every thursdaay. This was in the days before the internet became big. I also saw the picture they would print in the issue following. I believe the bodies they ran were referred to as the "mini-wedge" bodies that didn't have the full side boards that ran the length of the car, but did have side boards on the nose and rear deck. Anyway, that's why this race was originally "topless". Of course they still run it topless today, but that's just a throwback to the history and because it's in the name.

I'm interested to see where you got this information. Wedges were long gone by '93, even though the bodies did have those flat sloped noses at the time. I've never seen anything on the history of the Topless to indicate that the bodies were ever any different beyond the removal of the roofs.

08-17-2018, 04:35 PM
Well, I've been searching but I can't find any older pics from the topless 100. Perhaps, I was mistaken and it was some other event that I was thinking of. However, there were wedge car event held well past the end of the wedge car era. Anybody got any early topless 100 pics?

I looked through some old memorabilia I have, and saw a Topless 100 flyer from '94, but no pictures. I'd definitely like to see some old pics and hear some stories from the early years if anyone was there. The first Topless I went to was 2000 and I've been every year since.

Hopefully the Lucas series and Mooney Starr are smart and reschedule the Topless 100 weekend for October 11-13, I'm sure the teams would vote for the race to be rescheduled rather than losing a $40,000 to win race.

I doubt the topless gets re scheduled for that off weekend. Batesville has that big modified race 2 weeks before. Not many tracks besides Eldora that can hold 2 multi dat events with only one week in between.

Of all the Lucas races at Batesville. None have been rescheduled when the whole weekend was a washout.

Locust Grove, AR – August 17, 2018 – The Comp Cams/Nutrien Ag Solutions Topless 100 that was scheduled for this weekend at Batesville Motor Speedway has officially been cancelled.

After discussions with officials of the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series and the Comp Cams Super Dirt Series, a date could not be established without conflicting with other scheduled events.

The only date available would conflict with the 5th Annual Lucas Oil MLRA Fall Nationals, slated for October 12-13. Some of the best regional drivers in the nation will be on hand as the Lucas Oil MLRA Series, along with the COMP CAMS Super Dirt Series battle it out at the luxurious Lucas Oil Speedway located in Wheatland, Missouri.

I’ve only missed two Topleess 100’s since the beginning and those have been in the last couple of years. They’ve never ran outlaw style bodies. West Plains used to have an outlaw body race in the fall for a few years back in the 90’s and that’s probably what some people are thinking about. It’s seemed to rain on the Topless weekend a lot in the last 6-7 years which happens to be the driest month of the year!
