He raced dirt late models some so I guess it's ok to post this here.
Have any of you read the new Balough book that he co-wrote with Bones Bourcier ? I've read about all of the short track racing biographies and autobiographies....Larry Moore, Jack Hewitt, Brad Doty, etc etc, and this one is definitely my favorite. Too many times the others fall into a theme of "things were rocky but they got better", then there is a cute story. There are exceptions but that seems to be a running formula with a lot of those books. Lots of things haven't been ok for Balough and he is completely open about it. The actual racing stories in this book are second to none as well.

Thanks for the tip jr29. I need to find that book on-line and order it. Will never forget when Balough pulled into the Syracuse mile with his radical modified. I think it was supposed to be a Cadillac. He sure stunned the pit area. I was able to see him win an All American 400 in Nashville, TN in the mid 80's. He was a wheelman.

He showed up at lernerville with his small block car and ran away with the feature. He stuck around the pits and became a fan of many regulars that Friday night.

Yes I was there to see it. I cant remember how it all went down but I think he blew them away w it and they deemed it to radical and told him to never come back w it.

If your refering to barefoot he used to run automatics in his cars and beat them on restarts but he had troubles w them not being very dependable and switched back to standards shift.

It changed modified racing forever. Never again did cars have stock appearing bodies.

But the body was largely smoke and mirrors. Sure, it was radical for the time and way more aerodynamic than the Gremlins, but underneath is where that magic was.

He ran Hutter motors, and was shaking it down at Sharon, maybe he hit Lernerville too. Hutter is in Chardon, Ohio.(NE)

Hutter had it going on then. Do they still build motors. Ron hutter was builder at that time.

He offered to do my Dad’s motors and he turned him down because it woulda been like an hour one way to get them. My Dad worked full time and didn’t really wanna deal with a motor guy that far away, but I think he always regretted it. He let Ross Racing Engines do them, he let him build one. That is all, after that only machine work, hint hint.

Not sure, I’ll look. He got into NASCAR stuff, I know that. Why my Dad always brought him up. NASCAR, asphalt modifieds, he was really good.

Look up Hutter Performance SS. Very much still in business, plus some history in there. He built Richie Evans motors for all his championships.

Yea, Wolfgang wrote one. The guy was my outlaw favorite and when he got the weikert ride I got to see him run the central pa tracks on many occasions.

How much is written in his book about the fire ? I wanted the guy to come back and be as strong as he was before the incident. Well, how much changed. Did I agree ? NO. Some of you disagree I am sure. But, they named people in the lawsuit that got in there to pull wolfie out.

I think as it turned out the attorneys screwed him also and they got more than he did. I'm sure you all have your opinions and I'm not trying to stir the pot. Remember he stayed on track after the track went yellow. In those days many took a extra lap after the yellow. Thanks for the memories wolfie, good and unfortunately the bad.

Another good book is Joyce Standridge's about Ken Schrader. He's always been one of my favorites with the ability to drive about anything and a great attitude. He was/is always a guy to spend some time around.

Hutter was one of the hot motors to have in the mid to late 80s and 90s, particularly once the DIRT/Asphalt stuff and 430s became a thing.

He was my favorite, Blue Blaney back in the day for me. Him and Bobby Kraus in the Jay’s Auto Wrecking #83 were good. Wasn’t a Kraus fan, but they were good.

Interestingly enough, I only got see Blaney and Krauss race a handful of times, and it was at Syracuse. I still lived out east when they were active. By the time I moved out here, they were both retired.

More like a heavier computer guy, sitting in a pair of sweatpants, scrolling through PornHub:).

Main mod guys when I first moved out here were Swartzlander, Bolland, Murd*ck and Russ (before he moved to late models) and Rex King. Weller would sneak one in now and again too. It was nice seeing a pretty deep group of competitive guys, I came from Flemington, where Pauch, then Hoffman won everything, and Grandview which was pretty much (and still is, really), The CVD, Strunk and Howard Show.

Pauch at Flemington was a pleasure to watch. The mods at grandview, wow. Josh, you ever get to reading, Tobias and chamberlain were another treat. Injected big blocks, those boys used to get it on.

Nah, I wasn’t able to get to Reading. It closed before I was born. I was able to get to both Nazareth tracks and saw the last race ever at the half mile. My first race ever was a Silver Crown race at Nazareth National, actually.

And by the time I was going to races, the injected big blocks were illegal. I was able to see the no weight limit alcohol injected small blocks at East Windsor though. Those things were wild.
