CARTERSVILLE, GA – The Durrence Layne Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series just crowned the King of the Crates on Sunday afternoon, but they now turn their attention to Smoky Mountain Speedway in Maryville, TN for another Coronation this Saturday night to crown the King of the Mountain after a $4,000-to-win 50-lap race.

There is a well-known sanctioning body that does some asphalt racing that likes to publicize their “Big 3.” Well, the Durrence Layne Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series has its own “Big 3.” The top three drivers in the point standings going into the King of the Mountain race at Smoky Mountain Speedway have won seven of the first ten races of the season.

Jake Knowles of Rome, GA is fresh off his third win of the season on Sunday afternoon after driving to victory in the King of the Crate 60 at North Alabama Speedway in Tuscumbia, AL where he was ordained King Jake II. Knowles is third in the Durrence Layne Dirt Late Model Series National standings with 852 points, and two of his wins have come in the last three races.

Knowles knows how to find Victory Lane at the historic Smoky Mountain Speedway, as he scored a win there earlier this season with the Sister Series to the Durrence Layne Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series, the Chevrolet Performance Super Late Model Series. Knowles uses the same race car, but with two different types of economical Chevrolet Performance Racing Engines.

Ashton Winger of Senoia, GA was two wins this season with the Durrence Layne Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series. The 18-year-old driver, known for his youth-fueled aggressive driving style, is second in the National point standings with 890 points, and he also leads the Cruise With The Champions Rookie of the Year point standings.

Winger is also competing for the VP Racing Fuels Young Gun Challenge Series title for drivers 18 years of age and younger. Winger is third in those point standings. Winger has a knack for adapting to tracks he’s never seen or been on before.

The defending and two-time Durrence Layne Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series and current point leader Cory Hedge(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word) of Loudon, TN will have a “home game” this Saturday night for the $4,000-to-win King of the Mountain 50-lap race. Hedge(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word) lives “a hill and holler,” as they say in East Tennessee, from Smoky Mountain Speedway.

Hedge(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word) has two wins on the season and is on top of the National Standings list with 942 points, fueled by eight top five finishes and no finish worse than sixth in his first ten races. He also has a streak of four straight top three finishes.

Another driver with a short tow to Smoky Mountain Speedway is Andy Picklesimer of Ooltewah, TN, who is fourth in the Durrence Layne Chevrolet Late Model standings. Second-generation driver Jamey Boland of Cuba, AL is fifth in the National points and second in the Cruise With The Champions Rookie of the Year points.

Marcus Minga of Shannon, MS is sixth in the standings and T.J. Brittain of Centre, AL is seventh. Bryant Marsh of Corinth, MS is a former VP Racing Fuels Young Gun Challenge Series Champion, who is eighth in the National standings, and third in the Cruise With The Champions Rookie of the Year points. A pair of Hohenwald, TN drivers are ninth and tenth in the Durrence Layne Dirt Late Model Series National standings. Tyler Wood is ninth and Oakley Johns is tenth.

The Durrence Layne Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series will be making its second appearance this season at Smoky Mountain Speedway. There were 36 cars in the pit area and lined up to qualify on July 27, but a heavy rain shower moved in to wash out the race. The 36 drivers that assembled for that race represented seven different states.

Among the local favorites expected are Greg Martin of Oliver Springs, TN, Jimmy Elliott of Cleveland, TN, Ruben Mayfield of Lenoir City, TN, Kyle Courtney of Knoxville, TN, Brandon Williams of Crossville, TN, Ross White of Knoxville, TN, Jensen Ford of Piney Flats, TN, Josh Henry of Newport, TN, and Jerry Green of Knoxville, TN.

The on track action at Smoky Mountain Speedway will begin on Friday night with an open practice session from 6:00 until 9:00. Pit gates will open at 5:00. The grandstand and tier parking gates will not be open for the practice session.

On Saturday, the pit area will be cleared at 2p.m. and will reopen at 3p.m. Grandstand and tier parking gates open at 4:00. Race fans will have an opportunity to meet the Durrence Layne Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series drivers in the Chevy Fan Zone on the Grandstand area from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Durrence Layne Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Pre-Race Registration and Technical Inspection will be from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. The driver’s meeting is scheduled for 6p.m. followed by hot laps and time trials at 6:30 p.m.
