Saw it on his Instagram that he’s running the 116 at Boyd’s this Saturday. I know he’s Randy’s son, and some will say “it’s just a number”...but you gotta earn the right to run that number. He’s not there yet.

What? How do you "earn a number"? Every driver needs a number, and just about every number has been used by a good driver at some point.

That’s a crate car... and it’s a throwback to one of his dads cars. I don’t know what the big deal is?

A lot of kids run their father's number, not a big deal and don't think they have to earn it.

come on really, its his son, if anyone has the right to run a number, its one of the kids that do, common sense, just gone today, not bashing but can't believe the statement

Would you feel better about life if he ran 116C instead?

Well I see it didn’t take long for y’all to turn a simple statement/opinion around and twist it. I hope he runs well in it and makes me eat my words, and I mean that. We’ve just become so accustomed to seeing that car (and that “particular” 116) pull on the track and consistently be competitive and win races, that I hope to see that trend continue...regardless of driver. That’s all I was getting at with that statement. Y’all can settle back down now.

The concept that a kid cant have his old
Mans number is comical lol. The 116 wasn’t consistently winning and why the driver was sent packing

Well you can see it's the off season. So what happens if the kid races hard and beats everyone ? Boy the stories will fly then.

Race car numbers aren't earned in dirt late model racing. You can number your car whatever you want.

This is ridiculous. Did BMJR "earn" the 21? Did Hudson O'Neal "earn" the 71? There are so many national, regional and local drivers that have raced their dad's number since they first sat in a seat of a race car. This is just stupid.

Dumbest thread of the year.

Cameron and Randy came to Smoky Mountain Speedway in early October for our last race and Cameron was running the #16 on his crate car we asked Randy if Cameron wanted to go out for practice by himself and Randy gladly got him out on the track Randy said this was his first time on a track as big and fast as the Mountain and the kid looked great it took him about a 1/4 of a lap and he was wide open so the apple hasn't fallen far from the tree

Austin Dillion earned his number too

For many years we earned our number by finishing in the top 50... 1st in point got #1 on down the line.

If a top 50 driver quit you could ask for his number. We didn't have any letters... not allowed.
This was at the Milwaukee area tracks... That all changed sometime in the 90's iirc.

This thread is totally lame. It borders on being, "click bait" and hopes to one day achieve "Fake News" status. He's Randy's son, if he wants to honor his dad by running his number so be it. Like someone else pointed out, "How the heck do you earn a number?"
