More like recognize the place. You can't really see the track.

2nd photo does indeed look like Thunderbird.

1st photo - I still say it is Iowa State Fairgrounds. If I am wrong about that, wow that is crazy how similar it was built...

Des Moines Ia. R.I.P., because of the stage in the infield.

Could have been any of a thousand old fairgrounds tracks that once dotted the country...

Fairground racing most always grows up in weeds. There are few exceptions.

I went there for the HAT race back in '99. The big half mile track and the covered stands were awesome, but the race was not that great. Birkhoffer led every lap. Glad I went though because it's a very cool place.

I was visiting Gary Oliver's Tri-City Buggy shop in the late 70's. Gary mentioned that Iowa has 91 (?) counties and everyone had stock car racing.

When I promoted Chilton Speedway (WI) in 1988 we had a wonderful old wooden grandstand...years later they built a generic steel and aluminum deal that just wasn't the same.

I had a 900 seat covered grandstand at Amherst, WI and it was the coolest deal...very cozy.

Now if I could have just filled those seats...

West Liberty, Davenport, Columbus Junction, Cedar Rapids, East Moline all within a 100 miles of me when I grew up; all covered fairgrounds (you don't really see these in the south). Probably more just those came to me quickly. Funny thing Krooser, just took a picture of a TCB sign at a track down here...My first late model was a bolt on front clip TCB!

Approx 15 years back Iowa had more dirt tracks operating than any state. It’s lost some since then. But without fairgrounds tracks there would be almost none. Haven’t visited them all but quite a few, 34 at Burlington is the only stand alone dirt track I recall off hand. Someone else can enlighten me to others.

Vinton, Maquoketa, Independence, Oskaloosa, Knoxville, Tipton, and Dubuque are other fairgrounds tracks that I can think of with covered grand stands. Marshalltown and Donnellson have uncovered grand stands.

Farley and 34 Raceway are the only two dirt tracks in Iowa that I know are privately owned. There might be another in the middle of the state.

Didn't realize there were so many out that way. In Indiana there are only a few. Most have closed.

There was a fairgrounds track only four miles from my house, and no promoter could withstand the fairboard's cut of the action. Now there is nothing left but the weeds......
