Ricky Weiss Claims First-Career Southern All Star Victory
WoO Action at Cherokee Speedway and Lavonia Speedway Next

Headingley, Manitoba, Canada (04/30/19) – Ricky Weiss achieved yet another career first over the weekend. The pilot of the Derrick’s Sandblasting #7w Kakela Farms/ J&C Properties/ Sweet-Bloomquist Race Car/ Vic Hill Race Engine Super Late Model claimed the $5,000 top prize with the Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series on Friday night at Smoky Mountain Speedway.

For Weiss, the win has been a few weeks in the making.

“We’ve been tweaking [on the car] and we’ve been fast,” he commented. “It seems like we’ve just needed the car to come in a little faster. If it was a 50-lap race, we wished it was a 60. If it was a 60, we wished it was a 70. Finally, it was 40 tonight and we got it all done.”

With many of the top weekend events affected by rain, the field was stacked at Smoky Mountain Speedway. While many drivers dreaded the national invaders, Weiss welcomed the challenge as a measuring stick.

“When the Lucas Oil race rained out and we heard everybody was coming to Smoky Mountain. A lot of people were kinda cringing, wishing they weren’t here,” Weiss said. “But we want to race against the best and run with them because the big paying shows have got ‘em all.”

Ricky Weiss was one of 36 Southern All Star (SAS) Dirt Racing Series entries on hand at Smoky Mountain Speedway (Maryville, Tennessee) on Friday evening for the Rockin’ with the Stars event. He was debuting a brand-new Sweet Bloomquist Race Car.

Locking his spot into the opening night feature with the third-fastest time in his qualifying group, Weiss earned the fourth-starting position for the A-Main. Slipping past race-leader Ashton Winger on lap-11, Ricky built a comfortable lead throughout the remaining 29 circuits, en route to capturing his third win of the season and a $5,000 payday. The victory also marked the first Southern All Star triumph of his career.

Chris Madden, Ashton Winger, Jimmy Owens, and Brandon Overton rounded out the Top-5 finishers in the 40-lap affair.

Weiss gets back to business with the World of Outlaws (WoO) Morton Buildings Late Model Series with a pair of $10,000-to-win events. On Friday night he’ll be in action at Cherokee Speedway (Gaffney, South Carolina), and on Saturday evening the action shifts to Lavonia Speedway (Lavonia, Georgia).
Ricky is currently sixth in the latest series standings and leads the WoO Rookie of the Year battle.
