ADAIRSVILLE, GA – The battle for the 2019 Durrence Layne Chevrolet Modified Sportsman Division National Championship tightened up after Week 17 Durrence Layne Weekly Racing Series action over the weekend. Luke Riddle of Hartselle, AL saw his point lead over defending National Champion Oakley Gillespie of Five Points, TN shrink to just four points.

Gillespie finished second on Friday night at Tennessee National Raceway in Hohenwald, TN to earn 49 points in the Rounder’s Sports Bar and Grill Special powered by a $3,595 Chevrolet Performance 602 Circle Track Engine. Gillespie has 620 points after five wins, 15 top five finishes and 16 top ten finishes in 17 races over 13 weeks of competition.

Riddle had his worst finish of the season on Saturday night at North Alabama Speedway in Tuscumbia, AL with a seventh-place effort in the Morgan Machine Special powered by a $3,595 Chevrolet Performance 602 Circle Track Engine. Riddle has 624 points after seven wins, 16 top five finishes and 17 top ten finishes in 17 events over 13 weeks of racing.

David Nichols of Hodges, AL is third in the Durrence Layne Chevrolet Modified Sportsman Division National standings with 555 points after seven top five finishes and 12 top ten finishes in 13 races over 13 weeks of competition. Nichols finished fourth on Saturday night at North Alabama Speedway driving the Hodges Racing Special powered by a $3,595 Chevrolet Performance 602 Circle Track Engine.

Ron Bailey of Meridianville, AL drove the John’s Auto Repair Special to a third-place finish on Saturday night at North Alabama Speedway. Bailey is fourth in the Durrence Layne Chevrolet Modified Sportsman Division standings with 532 points after ten top five finishes and 14 top ten finishes in 17 events over 13 weeks of racing.

Seth Johnston of Santa Fe, TN is fifth in the Durrence Layne Chevrolet Modified Sportsman Division National standings with 528 points after ten top five finishes and 12 top ten finishes in 17 races over 13 weeks of competition. Johnston finished sixth on Friday night at Tennessee National Raceway driving the Johnston Racing Special.

Riddle, Gillespie, Nichols, Bailey and Johnston all have one more week to earn full points before they reach the 14-week mark of their respective Durrence Layne Chevrolet Modified Sportsman Division seasons.

Drivers racing in Durrence Layne Weekly Racing Series events compete for both a Track point fund and a National point fund. Drivers compete against drivers racing at Durrence Layne Racing sanctioned tracks across the country using a National points system over a 27-week season that concludes on September 29.

A driver’s best 14 weekly point totals count as their season total. Once a driver reaches 14 weeks of competition, they start trying to net points by replacing the lowest weekly total among their best 14 weekly totals with a higher one. A driver can only count their best point finish each week as their total for that week.

The top ten drivers in the Durrence Layne Chevrolet Modified Sportsman Division National point standings will earn a seat at the Durrence Layne Racing Annual Awards Banquet to receive a point fund check and a trophy.

Durrence Layne Chevrolet Modified Sportsman Division Week 17 winners were led by Bradley Qualls of Pleasantville, TN who drove the Isabell Construction Special to his sixth win of the 2019 Durrence Layne Weekly Racing Series season on Friday night in the Back The Blue Sheriff Tommy Hickerson Memorial Race at Tennessee National Raceway.

Ryan Sawyers of Newbern, TN took his third win of the season on Saturday night at Camden Speedway in Camden, TN driving the Sawyers Motorsports Special. Tracy Terrell of Russellville, AL collected his second Modified Sportsman win of the season on Saturday night at North Alabama Speedway in the Terrell Racing Special powered by a $3,595 Chevrolet Performance 602 Circle Track Engine.

Carlton Freeman of Eastaboga, AL made his first race of the season a good one with a win on Saturday night at Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, AL. The Saturday night Durrence Layne Chevrolet Modified Sportsman Division race scheduled for Thunderhill Raceway in Summertown, TN was rained out.
