ADAIRSVILLE, GA – Going into Week 21 of the 27-week Durrence Layne Weekly Racing Series season, Bryson Mitchell of Russellville, AL appears to have a commanding lead in the Durrence Layne Chevrolet Late Model Sportsman Division, but the way the point system is designed, a big lead can go away in a hurry. Here’s how the season works.

Drivers racing in Durrence Layne Weekly Racing Series events compete for both a Track point fund and a National point fund. Drivers compete against drivers racing at Durrence Layne Racing sanctioned tracks across the country using a National points system over a 27-week season that concludes on September 29.

A driver’s best 14 weekly point totals count as their season total. Once a driver reaches 14 weeks of competition, they start trying to net points by replacing the lowest weekly total among their best 14 weekly totals with a higher one. A driver can only count their best point finish each week as their total for that week.

The top ten drivers in the Durrence Layne Chevrolet Late Model Sportsman Division National point standings will earn a seat at the Durrence Layne Racing Annual Awards Banquet to receive a point fund check and a trophy.

Mitchell has a best 14-week total of 687 points after ten wins, 16 top five finishes and 19 top ten finishes in 21 races. Mitchell will be trying to net on a 45 with a 23-point lead over the second-place driver, Cruz Wallace of Tuscumbia, AL. Wallace has a best 14-week total of 664 points after two wins, 13 top five finishes and 17 top ten finishes in 20 races. Wallace will be trying to net on a 45 in Week 21 competition.

Blake Ray of Russellville, AL is third in the Durrence Layne Late Model Sportsman Division standings, just two points behind Wallace, with a best 14-week total of 662 points after two wins, 12 top five finishes and 14 top ten finishes in 18 races. Ray will be trying to net on a 41 in his next race. Austin Steele of Moulton, AL is fourth with a best 14-week total of 640 points.

Steele has one win, ten top five finishes and 15 top ten finishes in 17 races. Steele will be trying to net on a 37. Tony Chaney of Tuscumbia, AL rounds out the top five in the Durrence Layne Chevrolet Late Model Sportsman Division standings with a best 14-week total of 635 points. Chaney has eight top five finishes and 14 top ten finishes in 16 races. Chaney will be trying to net on a 41 in Week 21 action.

Drivers with 14 weeks of racing make up 12 of the top 13 in the Durrence Layne Chevrolet Late Model Sportsman Division National standings. That means eight drivers in the Top 20 of the National standings still have one to three more weeks to earn full points. In the coming weeks, drivers will begin to appear in the Top 5 from out of nowhere.

Week 21 of the Durrence Layne Weekly Racing Series season will see a four-race schedule on Saturday night. Camden Speedway in Camden, TN, ECM Speedway in Arkadelphia, AL, North Alabama Speedway in Tuscumbia, AL and Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, AL will host Durrence Layne Late Model Sportsman Division action on Saturday night.
