ADAIRSVILLE, GA – It was a long Week 22 for Durrence Layne Chevrolet Late Model Sportsman Division driver Cruz Wallace of Tuscumbia, AL. Wallace picked up a win Saturday night driving the Toyota of the Shoals Special., but it wasn’t at his home track. A protest was filed against Wallace, and he wasn’t declared the winner until Monday afternoon.

Wallace checked out the weather at his hometown track on Saturday night, changed his racing plans, and made a trip to Camden Speedway in Camden, TN for their Saturday night Durrence Layne Weekly Racing Series show. After winning the Durrence Layne Chevrolet Late Model Sportsman Division race, the engine in Wallace’s race car was protested by another competitor.

The engine in Wallace’s race car was impounded by the track and Durrence Layne Racing Technical Director Thomas McReynolds went to Camden Speedway on Monday to take the engine apart and inspect it. McReynolds declared the engine to be legal, and Wallace was the official winner. Wallace was able to net on a 45 and gain five points on his season total.

With the win, Wallace climbed back up into the second spot in the Durrence Layne Chevrolet Late Model Sportsman Division National point standings. Wallace has a best 14-week total of 671 points. Three other drivers in the Top 5 of the National standings did not race in Week 22 competition, and another failed to net any points.

Point leader Bryson Mitchell of Russellville, AL, the third-place driver, Blake Ray of Russellville, AL, and fourth-place Donovan Henry of Muscle Shoals, AL stayed at North Alabama Speedway in Tuscumbia, AL, but they were rained out in the middle of the show. Mitchell has a best 14-week total of 692 points, Ray has a best 14-week total of 667 points and Henry has a best 14-week total of 660 points.

Austin Steele of Moulton, AL made the trip to Southern Raceway in Milton, FL and took a 40-point win in the S&S Automotive Rocket. The 40-points he earned in the field of less than eight cars was not enough to net on a 41. Steele remains fifth in the Durrence Layne Chevrolet Late Model Sportsman Division National standings with a best 14-week total of 651 points.

In other Durrence Layne Chevrolet Late Model Sportsman Division Week 22 action, Cole Brown of Cullman, AL drove the Wilkins Logistics Special to victory on Saturday night at ECM Speedway in Arkadelphia, AL. The win was the eighth victory of the season for Brown, who still has one more week to earn full points.

In addition to North Alabama Speedway, Week 22 Durrence Layne Weekly Racing Series Saturday night events at Jackson Motor Speedway in Jackson, MS, Magnolia Motor Speedway in Columbus, MS, and Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, AL were also rained out. North Alabama Speedway has announced they will have a Week 22 Make-Up Race this Friday night.

Durrence Layne Racing officials have announced they are extending the Durrence Layne Weekly Racing Series two weeks due to an excessive number of rainouts during the 27-week season that began the last weekend of March and was scheduled to end on September 29. Now, the season will run through October 13.

The deadline for tracks to run Double Features to make up any rainouts during the first 25 weeks of the 2019 Durrence Layne Weekly Racing Series season will be extended one week to September 22, or by the end of Week 26.
