Thought about putting this on Leebos Corner put I don't think hardly anyone even goes there these days. Nothing like old late models, not to say they are better, but they were the best in their own time.

They ruined a great track when they paved Hawkeye Downs in 89. We were spoiled with all the great drivers in eastern Iowa, miss those days.

Luckily there's no shortage of great race tracks in Eastern Iowa.

I agree about Hawkeye Downs, glad I got to run it before and after (ran the dirt car on the pavement a couple of times). You are right about eastern Ia, great tracks.

Got to attend a race with my parents at Hawkeye Downs prior to it's ruination. Even though I was at an age when it wasn't cool to hang out with the parents I went along 'cause I wasn't old enough to drive and even if I had been I probably wouldn't have owned a car capable of making the 8 hour round trip. It turned out to be a great time since I wasn't familiar with most of the guys racing that night but Dad was. I remember that a couple of my Dad's favorites were there that night, Darrell Dake being one of them. Tommy Hearst and Fast Eddie Sanger were also there, IIRC.

One of the nicer tracks and facilities I ever had the pleasure of attending.

EvelB7
04-09-2020, 04:08 PM
Darrell was my one of my favorites as a kid as well, though I will say Mike Neffiniger was probably the top of the list. I was lucky enough to get to race with most of them (except Neffiniger, he retired before I was old enough to run). Running three or more nights a week was the norm back then...

I can't make out the name on this one. Back around 1980 there were a few cars with a wing actually on top of the car. Buck Simmons and Jerry Inmon come to mind.

I've only seen a steam roller one time at a dirt track ever. It was at Bluegrass Speedway in Bardstown, Kentucky.

The 17 was most likely Tony Stewart (Washington, Ia., unless he was injured during this time period). His family built cars and engines; also owned a lot of winners in the southeastern Ia area.

Now that is a gorgeous race car, right there. Not all twisted up in the front and jacked up on left rear with the front valance 10" shorter on the right side compared to the left and half rolled over in the corners with the right front stuck out a foot farther than the right rear. That vintage cars were the prettiest dirt late models of the generic era.

I watched Ol' Highbank win a ton of races driving for Lee & Dottie Byers.

A typical late model from about a decade prior to the time the transition was made to non stock appearing bodies and non stock frames and suspension's. Unfortunately I was not old enough to remember these cars when they were raced but I love the way they looked. I'd be surprised if there wasn't a big block in this car in spite of the 283 small block call-out's on the front fenders!

I'm not positive but I believe this car was owned by Bill Kreighauser of Gridley, Illinois and Lynn Wilson drove it. This '67 Chevelle was a thing of beauty, artwork on a dirt track!

Hewitt at 86 World, notice the silver crown fuel tank. I believe they wanted to try and run the 100 laps on methanol (people would qualify on methanol and switch to gas for the feature, it held a lot of fuel.

The Silver Crown tail tanks generally have a fuel capacity of 75 gallons which was the case with the tail tank Bob Hampshire mounted on the late model in the picture. That amount of methanol is generally sufficient to race 100 laps on a 1 mile dirt track, as is the distance of the Silver Crown races at Springfield, Du Quoin, etc. Since the dirt late models run engines that are larger in regards to displacement (Silver Crown rules limit displacement to 358 c.i.), are carbureted and weigh between 675 and 700 lbs. heavier than the Silver Crown cars Hamp figured that even with the added fuel consumption of the late model 75 gallons would be sufficient for his race car to run the 100 laps given the fact that Eldora is just shy of 1/2 mile in length. As the large fuel load burns off naturally the handling characteristics of the late model would change quite a bit, just as it does with a Silver Crown car on the mile tracks. This makes driver tire management an essential aspect of both type of race cars going 100 laps. Hamp figured Hewitt, being the master of tire management on the miles, he'd do just fine with that aspect of the late model at Eldora. He figured right.

Was that really a SC fuel cell or was that just a sprint car rear body section for show, since Jack was a spring car driver? I thought I remembered the announcer saying something about it. I remember seeing that car in the pits.

I'm not sure who won more in the Precision Performance ride, Tom Hearst or Ray Guss Jr. I think it was Guss that replaced Dolan, heard they thought Dolan was not aggressive enough.

Darrell Dake was from Cedar Rapids, Iowa and was nearly unbeatable at the now long gone Sterling Speedbowl Park in Illinois. Speedbowl was a 1/3 mile and was very near perfectly round. Darrell Dake had a top notch operation. His hauler and racecar were first class and immaculate down to the last detail. This '66 Fairlane was legendary among fans and competitors alike in western Illinois and all of Iowa. This car was a little before my time but I got to see Darrell race modern late models during his later years. This was the quintessential dirt late model of it's time.

As a kid my dad would pit by Darrell at Davenport. He would have me help with his tires, I ate it up. When I started racing he was one of the guys I was truly excited to be on the same track with. Before Simmons left North Carolina he actually rebuilt one of Dake's haulers (we did the exhaust on it). Even at 30+ years old I was excited when Darrell stopped by our shop to talk.

Wreck, Ed Sanger can be still be found in the stands today, his stories make you forget about the racing, lol. I was at a WDRL race in Superior Wi. and was talking with the promotors and when I told them I was from Iowa they told me how impressed thet were with Ed, one year he wrecked front end of his car in the heat, they thought he was done but he worked on it, started in the back but ended up winning the feature. Many other stories about the Silver 1000 in Proctor too. Truly a legend.

I believe it was the first lernerville 100 lap late model race. Anyhow, this guy shows up from Iowa, that alone got everone's attention. But more so than that , this was a time that everyone had big blocks under the hood. Here comes ed Sanger in with a small block, well I'm not sure how he did or finished but a lot of guys switched over to small block power the following year. If memory, ha, that's funny. Bob Wearing and Clate Husted had everyone on there feet. Wearing was none as Mr. Invitational. But boy Clate had his number every time I saw those 2 go head to head.

A year or two later the concrete grandstands actually slid down the hillside onto the track. Anyone remember that?

This orange and white 44 car was a screamer back in 1975 and 1976

Top picture The first car to ever win a $1000 feature at Brownstown Speedway in a 100 lapper.

I remember that race. It was the fair with a huge carnival going. Robert Earl ran the best race I ever saw him run. The Chevelle screamed around the track on rails for 100 laps in great tune. Beating Paul Crockett's Chevelle by a half a lap. Crockett's Chevelle won 12 features at Brownstown in 1976 but got a surprise that night.

The cars ran 13" tires back then, BTW

1976 was my first full season of going to dirt races.

One pair of my grandparents lived in Erie and had a tire recapping business. I spent a lot of summer weekends at their cottage outside town and in the shop with Gramps watching him break down tires with a sledgehammer and 2 tire irons. I remember where that high school was but never knew there was a race track there.

This was mid to late 1940s and I was only a few years old and hadn't discovered racing yet so Gramps never took me but he did put me on a stool at Sullivan's Bar, his favorite watering hole next to his shop on French Street. I'd sip a Dr. Pepper while he'd knock down a few fishbowls of the tap beer with a couple of shots of Calvert's. The booze killed him when I was only 8. Made me sad. He did introduce me to wrestling though and got to see Gorgeous George, probably the original super star, at Gannon Auditorium. A lifetime ago.
