View Full Version : Opinion on Front Ends?

I think it is safe to say that most people would agree that the overall top car is Rocket. But if asked who has the best front end (Steering Geometry, design, etc....)? I remember years ago people would take one builders front and put someone else's rear and vice versa. So I'm curious to see what are peoples thoughts on current front ends.

I don't have much experience with some of the other brands but every guy i know that's gotten in a xr1 has said it steers better than anything they've driven previously

I thought they all said they were tight as can be?

My buddy drove an Icon last weekend and said it was the best steering and drive off he had ever driven!

The best one I've ever driven was designed and built by me. Too bad there is only one.
The front end doesn't mean much if the back end won't follow it.

The problem is its guys going from a B/G Rocket to an XR1 so there's really not much to go off of.

So whats the magic that has made the cars steer so much better over previous designs?

Camber gain and toe.

So, with Modern Cars tied down on the RF and only having between 1 -1.5" of travel through a given lap, how and what effort does Camber gain and Toe actually have? Is it more the LF giving the Steering response we all feel or does the RR spring help with the Steering response?

The camber is closer to correct, while on the track, more of the time now. The lf does more to turn the car than it used to.

Look into the steering arms, one side vs the other. One guy on posted a while back about them, interesting. The LF moves a lot more and faster than the RF !

Quite a bit more positive caster than previous rocket front ends. You can travel the RF upwards of ~5" from RH and not bottom, bind or get any geometry in a real bad state.

there is a small chassis builder i know that has a long horn front with rocket xr1 rear that has started to make some noise lately , i will say there is very little difference in either front but the rear is where the magic is.......

Would that be TNT?

So isnt a bunch of this able to be improved on any car , given enough time a few key tools and a sharp mind? not saying as much travel maybe obtained, but getting the dynamics of the car at attitude right can be done with anything. Correct ?

Correct......the base setup from the manufacture is just that! You have to fine tune to your track, tires, and driver. We currently have a Rocket bg, and were a long way from Rockets base setup. Its just wayyyy too free for the tracks we race on!

Its just wayyyy too free for the tracks we race on!Maybe shocks and springs, possibly percentages if your not running the same class as the base setup was designed for but your generally not gonna run different front end settings than what the manufacturer currently recommends

We're different on those too, but just slightly.

I’ve driven a new XR1, Horn, and Swartz. As far as steering goes, the Swartz steered the best. My XR1 required me to constantly be on the gas
