The first ever unsanctioned Historic 100 at WVMS coming soon June 4th and 5th. $10,000 to win 40 lap feature on night 1, and a $25,000 60 lap feature on Saturday, with an extra $5,000 up for grabs if the winner Saturday night is sporting a throwback scheme. Should be a fun weekend, the track in Mineral Wells is beautiful, I just hope they can pull some cars for this event, we all know the track is long and fast but there's good money up for grabs. I think 30 cars would be a success, we shall see.

Yes, the four days at Eldora hurts it badly, I think. I'm pretty confident JD will be there. Overton and Terbo are both very possible. I don't look for driver websites to be updated until the week of. Probably a couple last minute decisions.

Being a 5/8 in a sea of 1/4s is always going to keep the car counts in the low side. The locals to the area do not want to risk their equipment.

It definitely need sanctioned. Rumor was Lucas oil is doing it next year as Rick already inspected the facility and track. I so badd for him having to give out free entry fee in to pit passes just because no cars are coming. My guess is 25

I hope that rumor ends up being true. The entire “throwback” weekend is cool, DLM racing needs a race like that. Cody will work hard and figure it out. Already tons of campers down there.

No doubt about it the place will be packed. Cody is doing a great job but a lot of people just don't see a large car count

TerryM
06-04-2021, 09:40 AM
A lot of people are just in denial. The place is beautiful and will always draw big crowds, but, as I said the day it was announced, the decision to go back to the 5/8 track was a bad one. The car counts will always be low and the attrition will always be a factor. There might be occasional exceptions, but that will generally be the rule. It’s not because The Dream is the following week. It’s just the track itself and the reputation it has. I want to be wrong, because I have a personal connection to WVMS, and spent many a night there back in the 90’s when I lived only 15 minutes from the track. But I’ve talked to a whole bunch of drivers through the years about WVMS, and with everything becoming even more expensive over the past several years, I doubt they’ve changed their opinions recently.

Pennsboro32
06-04-2021, 11:28 AM
Terry, there’s no doubt the track is too big. Everyone knows that. They need to just build a 3/8 in the middle of it or pave it. But the dream being four days absolutely kept the majority of the top teams away. Had it been any other Lucas off weekend, I’d assume that Owens, McCreadie, and others would have been there.

I think so. Not a huge difference but probably 10-15 cars.

The earlier LM event was thinly attended. Is this purse that much greater, to expect many more cars?

I mean it was $8,000 to win the first event. This one is $10,000 and $25,000. With a $5,000 bonus available.

TerryM
06-04-2021, 12:01 PM
I’m sure there’d have been a few more cars if this big Double Dream scenario wasn’t involved. On the other hand, WVMS to Eldora is not a difficult drive, especially considering the crazy amount of miles these guys are used to driving. There’s more than one factor involved. The DLM big money stretch used to start in August, but with so many other high paying events added in the last decade or so, it’s hard to say exactly when it starts now. You could say it starts tonight and tomorrow at WVMS, but is 25K still considered a big money show? I know that’s a silly sounding question, but IMO it’s at least debatable. All I know is, we’ll be watching on Flo and hoping for a great race. That’s the thing WVMS needs. It would go a long way, as far as silencing the critics.

06-04-2021, 12:53 PM
The traction that the cars get nowadays really makes it even tougher on equipment, more than ever, which is why the car counts will never match the purse at tracks like WVMS. I thought the track raced very well for its size the first time they had LM's this year but to see Terbo blow the wheel clear off shows the torque and G-forces on the car at the big big tracks.

MRM
06-04-2021, 02:10 PM
Car counts are going to be thing everywhere. Between the regional races in a lot of areas, some unsanctioned events paying decent money, and double the fun at Eldora next week, racers are spread out or staying home this weekend. Several years back, this weekend was always the Tazewell/Florence doubleheader for Lucas until they moved it to earlier in the year and eventually dropped Tazewell.

At least Bloomquist put a throwback on it, unlike Davenport. I mean you’d think if anyone went there thinking hey there’s a free $5,000 for running a throwback scheme when I win, it would be him. Must be nice not to need money, just my thoughts.

TerryM
06-04-2021, 08:34 PM
I don’t think anyone considers Bloomquist’s wrap a “throwback”.

Kryptonite17
06-04-2021, 09:04 PM
My guess is with the Dirt Draft sponsor it was the most logical scheme to go with the colors. It’s more than the 49 cared to do and I appreciate him participating even if it’s not up to everyone’s requirements to be considered a throwback.

c1ty5tar
06-04-2021, 09:11 PM

Kryptonite17
06-04-2021, 09:22 PM
No, not “made” at all. Just saying if I’m the clear favorite in a pretty weak field and you’re gonna tell me the winner gets an extra 5 grand for a throwback wrap, I’m probably gonna participate and pocket the free money.

TerryM

Thanks for pointing that out, mobile isn’t the best for this site.

Assuming tomorrow night he doesn’t win, he wouldn’t get the bonus and be out needless money. Would it be a bad decision then? Just playing the other side here.

I feel like Bloomquist’s is worse. He did re-wrap and it still wasn’t that great.

Kryptonite17
06-04-2021, 09:42 PM
Anyone know what it costs to wrap a car these days? I admittedly don’t have a clue, but it’s not 5 grand. I’ll also gladly take JD and give you the field if you’d like to bet who the winner will be lol.

c1ty5tar
06-04-2021, 09:52 PM
No, not that much. But last time they were there like 5 car finished, Erb lost a tire on the last couple laps, and Moran would have flown by him before that wheel came off even after having a flat himself.

Not saying he is not one of the favorites, but finishing at that track after the last race was not something to bank on

BBQ, that terraced seating looks awesome ... until you’ve been there. You can’t see the front stretch from those seats. We sat there one time around 1988/89, and never sat there again. I’m not a backstretch fan, but at WVMS, that’s where you want to be — if you want to see the whole track. For the casual fan though, the terraced side is cool. Bring your recliner!

Do you ever post anything positive?I love the terraced seating, can you not see the cars at the very edge of the wall on the front stretch, yeah, but I’ll take it. If you don’t have a perfect seat at Eldora you aren’t seeing a whole spot depending where you are seated either. And you just accept it. Haven’t been there in a long time but I usually sit about 3/4 of the way up if I remember correctly. And close to the center of the front stretch. Must only be cool for us casual fans Boro.:)

20 cars for $25,000 to win? Somewhere in Tennessee drew 24 for $4000 to win. The 5th place finisher (sorry, can't remember his name) was a lap down. Not a good sign for WVMS. Fans will support for awhile, but lack of a quality field will take its toll. Hope they figure this out with all the money that has been spent.

As much as I despise the use of calcium, WVMS is the perfect candidate for using calcium so that it slicks off from top to bottom. Water the top occasionally to keep a little bit of bite in it and the racing would be decent. That track can't keep being that fast. For some reason they over watered it every day.
