Charleston Summer Nationals Event Canceled
June 28, 2022 (LaSalle, IL) – Due to unfortunate circumstances we will be canceling the July 5th Summer Nationals race at Charleston Speedway. Due to the health concerns and health complications of race promoter and President of Sixteens Race Promotions Tony Izzo Jr. The event was slated to be the return of the Hell Tour to the Charleston Speedway, Super Late Models have been absent from the track in over five years. The event was also slated to be a race in honor of the Graves Family and their contributions to the track over the decades. Last week, Tony was tested and evaluated for stroke like symptoms. The good news is it wasn’t a stroke however he has what they call Bell’s Palsy, which means he has lost all functions of one side of his face. The left side of his face is in a paralyzed state. Recovery is expected but doctors have said it can be up to several months before he is 100 pct recovered. Tony is currently taking medications and doing therapy in hopes to speed up the recovery time. With the cancellation of the event a make-up date for the Graves 40 race is being looked at. The ideal date would accommodate the event to return to the Mars Racing Series schedule. We also want to find a date that makes sense for the best turnout of fans and race teams. Tyson Graves, with Mars Racing Series commented, “It’s been a challenge to get this race in to honor my family. I will do everything I can to make this race a success and an event for years to come. I am thankful to those who have given and shown support of this event. We will make this event happen as soon as we can.”
Tony wants to thank everyone for their understanding during this time. Sixteens Race Promotions would like to thank Sonny Ross for being so helpful and understanding in this situation. Hopes of a Summer Nationals return to the Charleston Speedway will be looked at for 2023.
