Hole in Nose

Over the past few years I've seen a few late models with holes in the nose on the left side. What exactly were they trying to accomplish?

Down Force.
Getting the air out from under the car to help generate the down force.
Also seen, big LF tire openings, LR tire openings, LS doors pull out at the bottom just ahead of the LR tire, Holes in the deck on the left side Etc....
