What would be a good motor build for a pure stock class in my area? Will be 80's monte. Can run 9" ford rear. There is a ci limit..here is the rules- must remain stock without any modifications in stock location. Maximum permissible sizes are 265 283 302 305 307 318. One stock 2 barrel carb or unmodified 4412. No duel pumpers or predator style permitted. No fuel injection. 4ci and .030 over Is allowed. No roller rockers. Flat top pistons only. 3200lbs
Id say 305ci theres alot you can do to these motors without breaking the rules and parts are easy to find. I have a friend who built a 331 stroker out of a 305, and it will still fit your rules.
I agree on the 305, not sure how a 331 would fit your rules though as it says maximum of 305 or 307 for a Chevy +4ci.

Of course the 302 would be my first choice, but good luck trying to find one. Back in 1969 when they were the engine for the legendary Z28, they were blowing them up at the dragstrips on a weekly basis. If you do find one, you better have deep pockets.
Second would be the 307, it is basically a 283 with a 3.25" stroke (kinda like a large journal 327 crank). The 305 has a 3.48" stroke and a much smaller bore than the 307. The bigger bore of the 307 will produce more compression (if bored .030 over) than the 305. Also, most used 305s have a lot of endplay on the cranks. You gotta rebuild them. Like anything else, there is a problem, and that's finding a 307. Who knows what's lying around in your shop, maybe you could throw one together with some odds and ends (like a 283 with a small journal 327 crank).
These rules are too simple. Why do they make these kind of rules? What they are really saying is no 350s or 400s? Chances are good that they won't be pumping or tearing down any engines, unless somebody starts winning all the races. Good luck!
If you put a 283's 3 inch stroke crank in a 4 inch bore 327 block you have numbers 302.
Thanks for the input guys. I was also leaning towards the 305. The track is a 3/8ths mile semi banked track. What intake/head combo would you guys suggest for a 305? Thanks again. Josh
302 ford boss would be my first choice. Get a 302 block and some aussie small chambered cleveland heads. That'll work and run circles around any chevy you could build.I'm not even a Ford man and that would be my choice.
From budget and "easy" stand point, I would go 305 from the early '80's with the 1.84 intake valve and put in the flat tops.
From a "buttkicker" stand point I would go with a 327 block, 283 crank, 305 early '80's head, and the flat tops.
As far as intakes, a late '60's/early 70's Q-jet unit with the 4412 carb., or if you can find one, a Rochester 2V carb. from a early 70's 400 Chev.
id go with the 318,..its a better "stock" motor,..stouter blocks,..shaft mounted rockers from factory,..3.31 stroke with a 3.95 bore is best bore to stroke ratio in the small block world,..6.123 rods from factory,..good cam an planning no reason to not make li over 400 hp,..an 3.31 stroke would turn up quick too!!
I have not seen many stock classes that will let you cross breed the racecar. Typically it is engine must match car, just do not see how the 318 is listed for a Chevy.
I think they need to update their rules some.....time to get out of the sixties! You'd be lucky to find much of that stuff now days.

Time to get BACK to the 60's... simpler rules, a wide variety of cars and engines and some real competition. There is TONS of old stuff around if you just look for it... the best thing that could happen to this sport is to have the racers put away those those catalogs and keep their plastic in their back pocket and build a car with the CASH you have on hand... much cheaper and we'd all be better off.Quote:
