Need further education....Why do I see cling wrap around the tires. What is the purpose?
They soak them in highly toxic potions then wrap them to keep em fresh.
Went straight to the source on this one and asked the Midwest Hoosier rep at Dodge County back in June. Was told wrapping the tire, keeping them in a controlled environment (humidity and temps) and out of sunlight, helps preserve the rubber and keep as much of the oil in the tire as possible.
Helps keep the rubber from drying out, keeps the oils in the rubber. It can be part of some nefarious purposes too, like when I still raced karts a lot of dudes rolled tires in chemicals then wrapped to help it be more effective, but I doubt that's whats happening here as it would draw too much attention.
It's all BS. It does nothing. Monkey see monkey do.
formercrewguy,
I respect your opinion but will disagree. I am only a weekend (race on Friday and Saturday) racer but I wrap my tires and here's why. I do my tire work (sipe and grind) on Tuesday night, if I don't wrap them and put them in the trailer until Friday night they will be hard and I would have to regrind them. By wrapping them as soon as I am done grinding on Tuesday they don't dry out and when I unwrap them Friday night they still feel as if I just ground them.

I know that some drivers wrap them because their tire racks have to sit outside their haulers at tracks. They wrap them to keep from having to pressure wash all tires in their racks after every race. One example would be the 4B.
It helps keep the undetectable tire treatment you put inside the tire from evaporating out to
I was at Lernerville a couple of years ago and saw them on Tim McCreadies car when they unloaded. I asked Tmacs crew chief why they did it. He said for them when they're moving the car around it helps keep the tires from getting contaminated with debris and oil if they're at the shop?
Keeps them from getting dirt on them....
I was told by a owner it helps keep them from drying out?.
If I could see conclusive a/b testing that showed wrapped tires are faster ok....otherwise it seems silly that you'd want to keep the oil on your tires.... don't we use oil dry to get rid of the oil on a track?
I've seen too many things that came along that were the latest and greatest then have them simply disappear when the next unproven theory comes along....
