Not sure if I'm understanding exactly what youre looking for, but your ring/pinion ratio IS your final gear ratio (with trans in hi gear, 1-1 ratio). From what you describe, with the 486, your trans would be a 1.20 ratio, & Ive never heard of a trans ratio that close to a 1-1. What type trans/rear end are you using?
You multiply the trans ratio & the rear end gear ratio to determine final gearing.
He is refering to a quick change rear end. Some have 4:86, 4:57, or 4:11 ring/pinion ratios. I have always ran a 4:86 rear end and had the same issues. When I got a different car....I wasn't aware it had a 4:57 ratio.....so the 5.94 gear I normally ran....only came out to a 5.63 due to the change in the ring/pinion.
Well assuming your talking about a 10" ring gear. You can actually get to a 5.82 ratio by running gear set #35 from Winters.
