$4K to win, 600.00 for third, and $25.00 for sixteenth through 20th.!!!!
That was big money.
The purse was also listed on the DoD history page but not as in depth as this.
Notice the time Sunday afternoon it didn't get real popular till they but up lights an started running on Saturday night not sure what year that was.
They switched to night time racing in 1986. But I beg to differ on the popularity starting then. The late 70`s early 80`s there were always a lot of cars and people.
$4000 in 1971 would be worth about $26,000 today.
I remember one of the announcers at Eldora talking about the first World 100. At the time, many thought it might have been a misprint, or that the total purse was $4,000. In 1971, a 4K to win race was unimaginable.
The first Hillbilly in 1967 paid $2k
In 1978 Robert Smalley started the NDRA paying 10,000 to win the first touring late models.
How many cars turned out then compared to now?
And the first 4 places in the heats and dash paid $$.
Nice find 👍
Not hard to find. It's all right here.

Paid $9000 in 1976 and the guy that won it in 76 won a heat in 1977 but was a DNS for the feature.
Hughes blew up coming to the checkers in the heat.
Kenimer and Snooks went 1-2 in that feature. Could have had a NGA podium that year, but alas it was not meant to be.
