I was in the grandstands at Santa Fe the night this video was recorded.
650 HP. Lol
That was plenty in those days...
It's crazy how slow they are compared to today's late model.
That track looked pretty flat.
That was cool in a lot of ways. Especially that the commentators were actually at the track and not announcing it after the fact. I don't care much for the line up rules used by USAC, getting qualifying time back for consys and feature like they do with sprints. So neat to see some of those guys again. Good ole Bedford boy Godsey looked good. Not enough for Moyer on that night.
Sante Fe's surface was dirt... I mean hauled in from a construction site dirt. And the track was pretty slow... flat, narrow with tight turns. A real bull ring on Saturday (and Sunday) nights. You had better bring your A game to compete with the no holds barred style of racing they had there. What wasn't settled on the track or in the pits might be handled after you left the gates. Tough town.
Loved to race there, miss that place. Your right it had a little banking but not much. The surface was not dirt but clay and with what ever Howard mixed in you could walk across the track after the races and it would pull your shoes off you feet it was so sticky. I won a lot of heats and semis but never a feature there.
You would know more about the joint than I... we just ran specials there. I only remember it as being real slick in the main's ....
I was on Wolf Rd. last week but didn't make it to the 9500 block...
