how bad was the tire soaking and cheating in the 80's and 90's
I've always heard it mostly started in the 2000s in late models and before that they were mostly playing with traction control. For a while, Dale Macdowell was commonly referred to as Dale MacTraction. ;) Anyway, what I've heard is the tire treatment started in the go kart racing and late model teams picked it up from there.
Look at that list of names, all guys that get to the checkered flags 1st. If you aren't soaking em' you may as well start. Give those wheelmen a set of tires fresh out of the series rig before feature time and they'll still win though.
Davenport was busted at Golden Isles
We did it in the late 70's until softer compounds came along....no compound rules back then.
People that win big races these days don't prep tires. 10 years ago when there were no rules it was the Wild West, but it's not that way anymore. This is a result of a poor testing procedures, and manufacturer and distribution errors.
Updated list. Anymore? Is this accurate?

Just think how fast you would be if you had traction control, cheated up tires, and the device..................But wait......
