Had a '79 Chevy one ton crew cab that I bought years ago used from a guy that did explosives for movies with over 140,000 miles on the 454. I did a ring and valve job on it at around 165K and towed my racecar trailer all over the West for many years and when the front suspension was finally worn out and the whole truck had more squeaks and rattles than my old body I sold it with some 350,000 on it. The carbureted big block still ran flawlessly and still got it's usual 10 1/2 mpg empty and 10 pulling a fully loaded trailer up and over the Sierra Nevada Mountains from elevations of 2-8,500 feet. Was a great truck and I still run the big blocks. Current one is an '02 with an 8.1 (496) that sucks fuel at an 8 1/2 mpg rate. Had it since it was a year old and it's been a very reliable truck.
