Southern Thunder Series Debuts Saturday At Whynot Motorsports Park

ABERDEEN, AL – The Southern Thunder Series, a new touring series for Late Models powered by the Chevrolet Performance 602 Circle Track Engine, will have its inaugural event this Saturday night with a $1,200-to-win $75-to-start 25-lap Main Event as a part of the 10th Annual Battle of the States Race at Whynot Motorsports Park in Meridian, MS.

Motorsports businessmen Mike Boland of Boland Performance in Cuba, AL and Robert Brown of Brown Engineering Racing Engines in Aberdeen, MS are the Founders of the Southern Thunder Series. Their goal is to give racers and tracks an economical option to make a little extra money in a tough economy.

Not only will Boland, Brown, and Brown’s wife Sara handle day-to-day operations of the Southern Thunder Series, but they will also serve on the Race-Day Staff. Brown will be the Race Director of the Southern Thunder Series, and Boland will be the Technical Director of the Series.

Sara Brown will be the Registrar of the series. Kenny Thomas will serve as the Southern Thunder Series Pit Stewart and Assistant Technical Director. Roby Helm will handle the Announcing and Public Relations duties.

Drivers have already been Registering online to be eligible for the Southern Thunder Series 2023 Point Fund that will be paid out at the completion of the inaugural season. To date, the Southern Thunder Series has announced a nine-race Schedule of Events at six different dirt tracks in Mississippi and Alabama.

The Annual Southern Thunder Membership Fee is $150 and can be paid at the track, or it can be mailed in with a check or money order to the Southern Thunder Series, 10070 Sharpley Bottom Road, Aberdeen, MS 39730. Among the drivers that have thrown their hat in the ring for the 2023 Southern Thunder Series Championship are Ben Hulsey of Phil Campbell, AL, Trace Armstrong of Hayden, AL, Ellie Hughes of Causeyville, MS, Jeremiah Joyner of Belleville, AL, Terrell Harris of Nettelton, MS, Jarrett Jones of Guntown, MS, Bailey Callahan of Weir, MS, Matt Grable of Mathiston, MS, Bradley Price of Hamilton, AL, Terry Wilson of Carmack, MS, Trent McLeod of Baker, FL, Allen Edwards of Starkville, MS, and Jamey Boland of Cuba, AL.

The ontrack action at Whynot Motorsports Park will begin on Friday night with an Open Practice Session from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. On Race Day this Saturday, Pre-Race Technical Inspection will begin at 4 p.m., the Drivers Meeting is set for 5 p.m., and Hot Laps are scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

The engines that will power the Southern Thunder Series Dirt Late Models are the affordable all-steel 350 horsepower Chevrolet Performance 602 “Crate” Engines that are built and sealed at the factory to prevent any expensive modifications. The Southern Thunder Series will also utilize an affordable Shock rule with a claim option.

The Chevrolet Performance 602 powerplants are called crate engines by Chevrolet Performance because of the wooden containers that are used to ship the engines to Chevrolet Performance Dealers across the county, and then on to the racers.

Terry Wilson Logging will pay the $100 Fast Time Award at each Southern Thunder Series event in 2023. The Southern Thunder Series also welcomes Quickcar Racing Products, Dominator Race Products, Advance Lazer and Machine, Boland Performance, Traktion Technology, Jones Racing Products, Willy’s Carburetor and Dyno Shop, Brown Engineering, RPI Racing Suspension, Swift Springs, Total Custom Carbs, and Extreme Graphics as 2023 Contingency Sponsors.
