Sheppard Grabs Pair of USMTS Southern Nationals Victories

NEW BERLIN, Ill. (11/09/20) – Fresh off his third World of Outlaws Late Model Series championship, Brandon Sheppard collected a pair of United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS) victories over the weekend.

Sheppard drove the Ramirez Motorsports No. B5 Boomtest Well Service/ RAW Truck Wash/ Hughes Racing Chassis Modified to the winner’s circle twice during the 3rd Annual Summit Southern Nationals at RPM Speedway.

A field of 49 of the nation’s top Modified drivers converged at RPM Speedway in Crandall, Tex. After charging to a heat race victory from fifth, Sheppard earned the second starting spot for the $3,000-to-win main event.

Terry Phillips jumped out to the early lead in the 40-lap feature. Mechanical problems, however, ended his night on lap 14, handing the lead to Sheppard. Brandon went on to pace the remaining laps while his teammate, Dereck Ramirez followed him to the checkered flag in second. Tyler Davis, Jake Gallardo, and Chris Henigan rounded out the Top-5.

Wrapping up the 2020 United States Modified Touring Series season on Saturday, Sheppard grabbed a heat race win to earn the fourth starting position for the finale. Just like the previous night, Terry Phillips took control at the drop of the green flag with Sheppard quickly grabbing second.

Sheppard edged in front to lead lap 11 and never trailed again. Brandon went on to take the checkers 2.214 seconds ahead of Tyler Davis to pocket $5,000. Phillips, Gallardo, and Ramirez completed the Top-5.

“The track was awesome once again tonight and my car was great,” Sheppard said. “I could run top, middle, bottom—wherever I needed to—and I was able to rotate it in the middle of the corner and come off low. That’s where I was a little bit better than Phillips there.”
