make sure your timing is right, and what fuel are you using? what's your compression?

which cam are you running?
your dynamic compression will determine which gas is necessary.

depends on what RPM you'll need to turn. anything from 6.25-7 might work.
we use 68-72" 'ish rollouts.(GY short track special 22" or 23" x8x13's)
various setups turn 6500-9000

1981 celica GT with 5spd was the car that came with that gear.
Only that model, only that year.
the 3.42 is a lot more common.
Could also try some Legend classifieds..

run a 6.7" or 7.5" rear end and the 4.30 pumkin with the A40 2nd gear,
1.45 that'll give you around 6.235 final. if you need more gear,
use the 7.5" rear.. lots of gears available shorter then...

Do you have a wheel base rule?(both sides need to be the same?)
also, "wheel base" is centerline front axle to centerline rear axle, your talking track width above.

O/S valves, porting, more compression, bigger cam.

2/3T heads can be ported H U G E for their size.
fit the biggest valves that won't touch.
Norris makes a couple nasty 3T cams.
make that head...

assuming a stock 400 block ?
you'll need .8875" compression height pistons in which the pins will be completely under oil rings assuming Zero deck.

are you sleeving the blocks?

3T's are domed stock. take that away.. and you'll lose too much compression.
no sense in a 7.5:1 N/A race engine...
