On the 602s, there is a metal tag epoxied to the block on the passenger side just below the head. Not sure if the 604 has these, but it's worth a look. The tag will have the manufacture date on it.

Yes, they are based on or perhaps even refurbished Saginaw PS pumps. I seem to remember hearing that you could find a stock one with factory remote tank on a Olds Omega or something like that, but I...
-
They are 3/8" press-in. Don't know for sure on the seat pressure question, but I would think 100 to 110 would be a safe number.
-
My opinion, those plugs are too cold for the 602. Go with an NGK TR-5 or the AC Delco plug in the crate owner's manual.
-
Carb jetted too rich or spark plug heat range too cold?
-
The lighter internals is not rumor. It's printed in black and white in the GMPP crate engine manual. The pistons in the newer motor are just shy of 80 grams a piece lighter. The two may perform...
-
Brad, thanks for the reply. I'm not suggesting anything in particular about rebuilders using aftermarket pistons. Although from what I can tell, this would definitely be an option in the older 602...
-
Have had compression checked on both motors with the "whistler" device. The newer version motor which is still sealed from the factory checked 9.4. The rebuilt one checks 9.2. Leak-down test on...

Brad, I posed this question in another thread, but it seems to fit here too. I'd really like your opinion. You said only minor specifications have changed, but in 2010 there was a change that I...

So the GM circle track crate motor manual says that the old version 602 and the new version 602 should perform the same. The new version has a piston/pin combo that weighs about 70 grams per...

We bought a 602 from them a couple years back and it was a great piece with a recent manufacture date.
-
I believe they are the same plug with the exception of the heat range. the TR55 is a little colder than the TR5.
-
I don't see GM ever doing that. They are not in the business of supplying rebuilders of these engines. The want to sell new crate engines. I think the $84 pistons is proof enough that they are...
-
Brad, how does either of those plugs compare to the TR-55 in terms of heat range? I always figured both were quite a bit colder than a TR-55 and maybe too cold for the 602. Thanks
-
They will rate at 80 pounds out of the box in my experience. If your tech guy is using a the on-head type tester and testing them hot, they will show lighter than what they really are. Our usually...

The way I would run that setup is with a diaphragm type regulator - no return. You should be able to adjust the pressure from 4 to 9 or so. Set it at 6 and forget it.
-
No problem with that - should take care of it.
-
It takes the standard SBC FP push rod.

Mr. Flower, I actually got the same meaning from his explanation of the rule as I did from yours. I still don't like it. The rule is too difficult to enforce - too subjective. To say that a cam...
-
Man, you have to wonder where some of these rules writers get their ideas. What exactly is the definition of a "smooth" idle? LMAO
Sorry, just couldn't help but vent a little at yet another...

I'd say it depends on your tech official. The springs are rated at 80lbs of seat pressure. Some techs may give you a certain amount above that, but you need to know what yours does.

Ours pumped at 165 today, but as mentioned in the attached thread, it was after the lifters had bled down.

I use Royal Purple 15-40. Good oil and easy to get.
