GEORGIA STOCK CAR RACING NOV. 4, 2010

CHANGE CHANGE CHANGE: In mid-November, Timmy Hutson will become the new writer and publisher of GEORGIA STOCK CAR RACING.
Hutson is a well-known asphalt track flagman and race fan, and has done some PR work for Lanier National Speedway.

When I started this newsletter four years ago, it was to help tracks put more butts in the seats by sharing info about upcoming shows and the weekend's results. Hopefully new writer Timmy Hutson will have better luck getting tracks to send news and results.
Four years ago there were several racing publications in the area, often sold or passed out free at the tracks. These are all gone now - stabbed fatally by the internet, email newsletters, and blogs. I now want to see the night's results posted on the WWW by the time I get home from the track.
One goal was to visit every track in Georgia, but Gordon Park, 441 Dublin, Albany, Swainsboro, Waycross, and the new Needmore are still strangers. I did visit two which are now gone - Douglas and Sugar Creek. All of the asphalt tracks are struggling, and both Senoia and Albany switched to dirt. The exceptions are two remodeled tracks - Greshams and Boyd's - which are thriving.
Dirt tracks are struggling too, with fewer traveling series shows, low car counts, and fewer fans. Hopefully the good weather made Talladega Short Track's NASCAR weekend shows a success - after two years of bad weather and rainouts.
The Travis Pennington statutory rape conviction has been the most discussed story this year, and no other media has devoted as much time and space to it. I've learned a lot about how tragic this is for the young man and his family, how uncivil the law and prison system is, and how slow legal things move. Since the conviction on Mar. 11, Douglas County has not been able to complete the paper work to allow Pennington's lawyer to file an appeal. When this case moves ahead, I'll send the story to Timmy Hutson for an upcoming issue.
