Common problem on a 180-degree crank 2.0/2.3L Ford, with even moderate performance upgrades. And the problem gets worse with a higher numerical rod-length to stroke ratio. Drill the flywheel & install a 7/16" dowel in the crank flange. Problem solved! -Dave-

I always use a steel flywheel saver on the aluminum flywheels.Keeps bolts from digging into flywheel and loosening up.Always lock tite flywheel bolts also.

What type of flywheel, the OEM mustang bolts are too long to use with anything other than the mustang OEM flywheel. I have used the escort flywheel and currently have an alum flywheel, both required shorter bolts, only around 1/4 to 3/8" shorter but the long (stock) bolts will bottom out in the crank, you will think theyre tight but they arent!

could also be junk in the bolt holes(dried up loctite, dirt, etc)preventing the bolts from seating all the way,it only takes 1 or 2 loose bolts to cause problems.

Have you tried a different flywheel. Are all three pressure plate locating pins in place.Check for broken spring in pressure plate, and clutch plate. Also make sure crank pulley is not bent or loose. If you happen to have a lightened stock flywheel, check it for cracks.Had a customer felt a slight vibration while racing, the flywheel had developed several radial cracks from the center hole and had begun to egg shape.probably was seconds from catastrophic failure.I have several NEW stock flywheels for sale if anyone is in need.

First time broke was a 88 ranger flywheel, bolts
then used 10000 rpm and they backed out of crank
last time it broke used pinto flywheel which I used forever on that motor

could tranny have something to do with it

Can't imagine how trans would cause this problem.Think I would look inside motor, possible cracked or bent crank, damaged piston or rod.Worst case you replace bearings and rings have a freshened engine and know there are no problems internally.
