We just took the birdcages apart. Sprayed them down with WD-40, light scrub with a soft brush, then spun them in our hands. If they had a gritty feel to them, they were trashed. If they spun smoothly, we put them back in. This year we replaced 3 out of the 5 bearings we run. Three sets had that gritty feel and all three were from the right side of the car.

    Hope this helps.
