Make sure battery is charged. If it is a bert unit make sure the clearance between the starter gear and the flywheel is (0.080).we usually just take two pieces of aluminum scraps from the body and double them up. If not then shim the flywheel back on the crank till it is. We had the same issues years ago untill we did this. Havent heard that noise in years.

Friend had an issue like this. It either had bad teeth on the flywheel or it was bent.

With a screwdriver slide the bendix and Idler gear out till it stops and take note whether it engages more than 50% tooth contact. Motorplate thickness as well as flywheel placement can rob you of full engagement. If your crankin over some big cubed compression 50% contact or less wont live. Once the flywheel gets boogered it gets worse.
The Blacksheep cometh ! With old bent sh!t that just keeps getting faster !
