    Default Hei dist help

    got a 406 chevy lost all power the dist gear was a bronze gear was smooth no gears left on it,put a new dist in it then it burnt a coil up put another coil back in it did the same thing any ideas

    First off is it a roller or flat tappet cam. The distributor gear must match cam design. Check cam to ensure it's not chewed up. Check all grounds and wires to and from battery to distributor. Also make sure that your coil has the little ground strap installed under the dust cover. High secondary resistance (or an open-circuit condition) will fry an HEI module. Also check rotor and spark plugs, If you have a bad rotor or excessive resistance in your spark plug wires this would make it easier for the spark to arc through the rotor instead of going through the wires.
