Default Bert bellhousing idler gear spring ?

Being new to the sport, a used(repaired) bellhousing was purchased by the owner/driver and the idler gear spring is on the starter side of the gear, is this correct or should it be on motor side. gears currantly don't disengage when motor is fired.

The spring should go between the aluminum strap that bolts to bellhousing and the idler gear...The bendix throughs it out and the spring helps disengage ...

We had similar problems with ours, which we bought new. Make sure you keep it greased and/or clean. We ended up replacing that whole assembly (aluminum strap, spring and idler gear) when we got tired of carrying around a screwdriver to pop it back when it got jammed.
