    BOYDS SPEEDWAY RESULTS 7-08-2011

A regular racing program was on tap this week after last week’s display of caution filled fireworks. This week the drivers all settle down to the task at hand and that was… just race. With the decision not to have a drivers meeting and go straight into hot laps the first group were brought to the greatly prepared surface at 6:45. As the crowd filled the stands each division took its turn on the 1/3 mile clay oval. Heat race winners in B-Hobby were #45 Dallas Brooks and #44 Walter Sims. Next up was CRATE LATE MODEL with previous Boyd’s Speedway winner Robby Mason taking the first heat securing his pole position for the nights feature and current division point’s leader and multiple feature winner Jason Welshan taking the second heat. We took a brief delay in this week’s heat to run the make-up feature for our FWD division which was called last week due to curfew ordinances. With Jared Blevins and Matt Patton bringing the field to the green it didn’t take long for Mr. Patton to take easy control of the field. Matt Patton went on to take yet another caution free FWD Feature. Finishing second was Thomas Gilbert followed by Daniel Burnette, Hailey Cresswell and Jared Blevins. Once the make-up feature was taken care of we were back to completing the local divisional heats. The A-HOBBY heat winners were Steve Tate and last week’s feature winner Blake Armitage. The STEEL-HEADED LATE MODELS saw a pair of Cleveland regulars take heat victories as Todd Morrow took the first and Lamar Scoggins taking the second. The last of this week’s heats were the FWD which was won by Thomas Gilbert and Matt Patton.

The first feature of the evening brought the B-HOBBY racers to the front stretch. With current points leader and multiple feature winner Dallas Brook set to start from the front row. Track officials issued a challenge to Mr. Brooks, start from the rear of the field and win would earn him an extra $100. Dallas Brooks took the challenge and elected to fall to the rear on the parade lap. This moved Ronnie Kerr up to the front row starting position and at the drop of the green took the early lead. Brooks began his quest back to the front from his 15th starting position. With several cautions coming out to slow the field down it was on lap 11 that Brooks worked underneath Kerr for the lead. Brooks went on to take another victory and collected the extra $100 bonus. Rounding out the top five was Ronnie Kerr, BJ Wilson, Corey Sanders and Mr. Herron.

The CRATE LATE MODEL brought their racing machine to the eyes of the fans on the front stretch. A pair of previous winners Robby Mason and Jason Welshan leading the way to the green, Welshan would take the early lead on lap 1. The only caution came on lap 6 for the spinning Jerry Coffman in turn 2 that would bunch the lead group back to a bumper to bumper start. Welshan would continue to lead as Jeff Smith pressured Mason for second. Welshan would take yet another victory followed by Mason, Jeff Smith Elbert McCullough and Kenny Kizzar.

As the A-HOBBY’S rolled onto the racing surface front row starters Steve Tate and Blake Armitage would lead the way. Starting from the rear would be point’s leader Booger Brooks in a borrowed B-HOBBY division car of Dallas Brooks. Booger Brooks experienced mechanical problems at the end of his heat race parking his primary racer. Not being out done the A-HOBBY division went caution free as Blake Armitage took his second straight victory followed by Steve Tate, Chuck Cooper, Jody Hixson and Gary Johnson.

The FEATURE EVENT for the STEEL –HEADED LATE MODELS was up next. Todd Morrow and Lamar Scoggins brought the field to the green. The question of the night was could anyone stop Jamie Perry from making his way back to victory lane for the fourth straight week. Mr. Perry would come to the green in his 5th starting position alongside of last week’s hard charger Riley Hickman. Scoggins would take the early lead on the field of strong competitors. And after last week’s caution filled feature, this week’s race was slowed only once as Soddy Daisy’s Morris Bice spun in turn 1 backing his Batmobile labeled racer into the outside wall causing heavy damage. As the race got back underway Scoggins held the lead over Morrow as Hickman had gotten around Perry for third. On lap 9 Hickman sailed around Morrow for second as Perry set his sights on the front runners. On lap 22 Hickman started to work the bottom side of Scoggins #32. Hickman would make the pass and go on to take the $1000 top prize followed by Lamar Scoggins. Perry would make a daring door to door move on the last lap passing his way to third followed by John Owneby and Todd Morrow. During the cool down lap Morrow bumped Perry sharing his displeasure for the move.

The final FWD feature saw a repeat of the first feature as Matt Patton made it 2 for 2. Patton was followed to the caution free checkered flag by Thomas Gilbert, Hailey Cresswell, Joshua Kilgore and Denver Shrum.

What a great job by the staff of Boyd’s Speedway and the racers to complete the racing program by 9:20. Next week brings the SOUTHERN ALLSTARS SUPER LATE MODELS to Boyd’s Speedway for the second time the year.
