    McGuire McQuick at Shutts Memorial

Duncan Doubles, Holcomb Hammers Mods, Fritter First in Mod Lites

    Gillian Gains Mini Win

    By Scott Wolfe

STEWART, OHIO- It was a solemn, yet fitting tribute to a veteran racing personality. From the Four-wide parade lap tribute from the Mini-Wedges, to the last checkered flag, a fast, furious evening of racing saw Grayson, Kentucky invader Josh McGuire and the remainder of the 91 cars in attendance pay respects in the third annual Jack Shutts Memorial at Billy Jarrell's Skyline Speedway. A large crowd saw McGuire bring home the 40-lap Late Model main, Groveport, Ohio's Cole Duncan claimed the OVSCA sprint main, Matt Holcomb claimed the AMRA Modified main and Tracey Fritter won the Mod-Lite main. High flying Jason Gillian won the Mike's Auto Body Mini-Wedge Feature.

Said AMRA LM winner Josh McGuire, "Thanks to Poskes Performance Parts, Hoosier Tire, GCP Race Engines and Mastersbuilt Chassis along with my crew and family. The key tonight was getting to the front and then getting low and just holding on. These Hoosier tires worked great! We've had a good deal of success here and it was good to be able to put on a show for the fans and the Shutts family."

Hot Rod Conley took the early lead from the outside pole and over the first two circuits built up a comfortable lead. Pole-sitter Jason Montgomery then fell into a groove and began to reel in the leader. Over the next 14-circuits, fans watched in awe as Montgomery pulled in beside Conley and Chris Garnes and McGuire filed in behind for what appeared to be the start of a fast car dash.

Two-wide, two-deep the four heroes battled diligently, sometimes with Montgomery nosing ahead, and then dropping briefly back to third in the high-speed tango. On lap six Montgomery officially became the leader and led until lap 16 with McGuire riding side-saddle the entire route. On the 16th circuit Montgomery drifted wide out of four and McGuire nosed in to lead by feet at the start finish line.

A lap later Montgomery had retaken the lead, but a spin brought out a caution, thus reverting back a lap with McGuire on the point. Montgomery challenged for several laps, but once McGuire’s mount took ahold of the rubber-clad surface, he was off to victory.

Fast-timer Chris Garnes, who earned a pair of tires for the feat, came on strong late in the race to finish third, shuffling Garnes to fourth and Conley to fifth. Only one caution marred the 40-lap event. Rounding out the top ten were defending Harvest 50 winner Zach Dohm, Tyler Carpenter, Ricky Williams, Freddie Carpenter, and Andy Bond. Young Tyler Carpenter was the winner of a group of close runners, finally winning a dual with Williams, while Freddie Carpenter earned hard-charger honors coming from 18th to 9th. Ralph Withem also had a good run to 11th.

If the first few laps of the Late Model feature wasn't enough to fill the competitive appetite of the fans, the 410 Ohio Valley Sprint Car Association feature was. For 25 laps it was anyone's race. Pole-sitter Cole Duncan took the initial lead over outside point-man, veteran Dave (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)son. Jimmy Stinson, the defending Skyline/OVSCA champ, worked high around (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)son while Josh Davis challenged low.

That was about all the breathing room Duncan had. To lap 17 Duncan and Stinson went nose-to-tail, wheel-to-wheel until finally Stinson moved high against the thin cushion to make the leading pass on lap 18. Now in reverse order with Duncan in the catbird seat, Stinson charged toward victory with Duncan dogging him every inch of the way. Coming around for lap 23 Duncan nosed under Stinson in turn three, then pulled him down the chute to retake the lead.

Stinson tried to ride some momentum off the high side, but fell a car short at the finish.

Said Cole Duncan. "Actually it was better to be in second when I was. I could see where I needed to be and kept Jimmy guessing where I was. It also helped to be able to catch Jimmy in lapped traffic. Thanks to Maxim Chassis, Dad, my family and Factory Kahne Shocks. The car really worked great all night long."

Rounding out the top ten behind Stinson were Josh Davis, Dave (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)son, Aaron Higgins, Andre Layfield, Chris Myers, Wayne McPeek, Benny Hickel, and Eddie Slone. Aaron Higgins was the hard-charger of the race.

The AMRA Modified main had a season's worth of action back in the pack, but up front defending Road Warrior Champion Matt Holcomb was on a rail and heading toward victory lane. Holcomb, the Greg Schilling Memorial winner, proved that win was the real deal in driving off into the sunset over a field of heavy-hitters of the modified division.

Draping a cool towel across his neck to put out the fire of a heavy second place battle, Rick Venham, Jr. was all smiles after winning a race-long battle with Andy Bond. Bond tried everything imaginable often drifting by Venham on the turn entry, only to scrape off speed in drifting back to third. Venham persevered for second, but never got the late-race caution he needed to make a bid at Holcomb.

Rounding out the top ten were Jeremy Blake, Robert Garnes, Doug Henry, Roy Roush, J.P. Roberts, Mark Luning, and Vince Conrad. Luning held fourth much of the race in a gaggle of cars that saw 5-to-6 cars battling for a top five. Kenny Johnson, driving hard but suffering a bit, perhaps from a heat race altercation was shuffled out of the top ten-- a rare experience on the AMRA trail.

Luning in-turn fell victim in the battle and the Skyline shuffle, as Jeremy Blake worked his way through the front-runners to fourth, Robert Garnes held a consistent fifth and Henry, R. Roush, and Roberts marched up through the field. Roy Roush was the hard-charger in a 17th to 7th run.

R.D. Jones, Charleston, WV saw Tracey Fritter's back bumper up-close and personal much of the 15-lap Mod Lite main. Jones tried high, tried low and a combination of the two to make a bid a Fritter, but Fritter's momentum prevailed as he raced to his second Skyline win of the season. Jones was second followed by Brandon Fluharty, Tyler Riggs, Nathan Casto, Mike Herrington, Troy Collins, Ray Heskett, Brian Herrington, and David Elmore.

Jason Gillian claimed the exciting Mike's Auto Body Mini-Wedge main over Mini-mainstay Cole Mayle. Behind the winning Gillian in the mini-33 Auto Parts car were Mayle, Coleton Perine, Corey DeLancey, Zach Carr, Skylar Zimmerman, Samantha Roush, Kasey Rankin, and Curstin Giffin.

Kids Bicycle racing highlighted the intermission with 25 kids participating. Additionally, C&S Racing Photo, Poske's Performance Parts, the OVSCA, and Eddie Miller Racing donated five bicycles to children in attendance, making a fun evening for all family and friends.
