Sealing bells on Winters Quickchange

I purchased o-rings for the bells on my rearend. Do they lay flat inside the bell or around the inside lip of bell? Should I use an RTV sealant to help secure them?

They go down in the lip. I rub motor oil on them to help them seal a little better.
