Bub McCool Tops 5th Annual Gumbo Nationals Opening Night

Greenville, Mississippi (11/04/11) – The first night of the 5th Annual Gumbo Nationals was held on Friday night at Greenville Speedway (Greenville, Mississippi) as thirty-four Super Late Models, representing seven states entered the PRO Dirt Car Series sanctioned event.

Bub McCool started the night by blazing to the fastest lap around the 1/4 mile to earn the pole for the RacingJunk.com First Heat with Neil Baggett starting to his outside. McCool would lead the distance in the event, fending off a mid-race charge from Chad Dupont to claim the win. McCool and Dupont were followed across the finish line by Greg Fore, and Neil Baggett as the top four cars transferred.

Chad Thrash and Bo Gordon were slated to start on the front row for MRC Racing Collectibles Heat Race #2, but Gordon was unable to make the call for his heat race after flipping on the second lap of his time trials. Timothy Culp would charge from the third starting spot to claim the win over Ross Camponovo, Mike Palasini Jr., and Josh Putnam.

MSRMafia.com Heat Race #3 saw Ronny Lee Hollingsworth battle with BJ Robinson for much of the heat before Hollingsworth slipped away to the heat win. BJ Robinson, Allen Tippen (started 8th), and Johnny Stokes rounded out the transfer cars.

MidSouthRacing.com Heat Race #4 was a heated contest as sixth-starting, Jack Sullivan passed race long leader, Kyle Pleasant with two laps to go to claim the win. Pleasant, Rick Rickman, and Brian Rickman rounded out the top four finishers.

The 5th Annual Gumbo Nationals concludes on Saturday night with the pit gate opening at 3pm, grandstand gate opening at 4pm, and the driver's meeting at 5:45pm with hot laps to follow. Twin b-mains, a last chance qualifier, and the 70 lap, $7,000-to-win/$700-to-start feature will be held.

The 5th Annual Gumbo Nationals is sponsored by Veteran's Pension Planners of America, MMC, Wilkerson Diesel & Tire, Barrett's Custom Spraying, and Ed's Auto.
