Oglethorpe Speedway Park promoter TED AUSTAD had a weekend full of trouble and did everything he could to try and make up for it on Sunday afternoon with the drivers that were
ABLE TO STAY IN TOWN
The track ran all of Friday night’s rained out feature races, a full show for the Championship Modified Tour, a make up for the Young Guns and features for the local classes that did not get to run either night.
“There were a lot of things we could have better prepared for in hindsight,” said a dejected Austad. “The weather was only one of the problems. We appreciate those who understood we were trying as hard as we could and I apologize to those who feel they got the short end of the stick.”
Arpin picked up the Young Guns Modified race on Sunday afternoon by holding back Julie McDermid for the entire race. McDermid could only get close on the restarts as Arpin pulled away during longer stretches of green. Aaron Higgins was the most impressive starting at the tail of the field and climbing to third before the checkers fell over the field. The defending Young Guns Modified champion Zach VanderBeek came home fourth with Dave Hess, Junior in fifth.
“You got to give some credit to these track guys,” said Arpin. “They have really been trying this weekend with the rain and all. We’ve had fun racing here.”
Those words came pretty easy for a guy that doubled up on the wins Sunday afternoon. Arpin also picked up the very first feature victory for the Championship Modified Tour. He again beat McDermid to the line for the victory. Tommy Weder ran an excellent race to finish in third while Craig Shuffield and Ricky Boahn rounded out the top five finishers in the series first of two features on the day.
The second race was led most of the way by North Carolina’s Brent Glasstetter. He led for the first half of the race before a red flag was displayed to re-water the track due to dust. After the track was redone, Dave Hess, Junior shot past and into the lead before holding off Steve Arpin for the victory. Nick Neville was third with Derrick Ramirez and Glasstetter rounding out the first five.
Michigan’s Myron DeYoung completed his clean sweep in the IMCA Modifieds on Sunday. DeYoung won Saturday night’s race before leading every single lap on Sunday. California’s Kellen Chadwick came home second with Brandon Gemmill, Casey McClaskey and Richard Clew completing the top five finishers.
Savannah’s Russ Brown was the winner in a highly contested Crate Late Model race on Sunday afternoon. The race looked to be Young Gun Corey Fletcher’s race to win until he blew a tire coming off the fourth turn on lap eleven. Former OSP champion Bobby Morris inherited the lead, but Brown was able to work past three laps later to snare the win. Morris was second followed by another former OSP champion Bobby Oglesby, Branden Yawn and Jay Hendricks.
Ricky Kellam and David Smith split the victories for the 440 Division while Guyton’s Bobby Morris picked up a hard fought victory in the Mini Stock class.
