    Default dodge charger need help...

ok setting up a car for my friend's son who is 14. The car is a 1986 Dodge Charger with a 2.2L, holley 350 carb. We are having a problem with the car flooding out. The car will idle all day, and you can rev it all day no issues, but as soon as we try to drive it the car dies because its flooding. we have checked all vacuum lines, replaced everything in the carb. has 59 jets with 6.5 power valve. we have leaned out the carb to the point the car will not start or run and still no luck still floods when we try to drive it. also does anybody know of a way to run a distributor without the computer but keeping it stock appearing... any help would be nice really lost on this one...

I would start by removing the power valve and installing a power valve plug.Drop the jets to 47 - 48 set the idle screws at 2 turns out and absolutely make sure all the vacume ports are capped and the base gasket isn't allowing any vacume leaks.I have rebuilt a couple 2.2 engines and am not quite sure how you have managed to bolt on a holley, but just make sure everything seals properly.

If the intake manifold hangs off the side of the engine similar to a Ford 2.3 you may be experiencing pull over. Not necessarily actual flooding. If so you will have to search pullover on these forums to get a fix for it.

well we do not want to change the jets the car has been running just fine with its set up. For some reason it just started doing this...and there are no vacuum leaks, we have double checked, and replaced everything in the carb, it will even spit gas out the air horn at 6,000+rpms... and no the carb is not on the side it sits on the back side of the motor, and it has solid motor mounts...and it has a carb adapter for the holley...

Have you tried a pressure regulator on the fuel line to the carb,or a different fuel pump?

set to 4psi, and everything in the carb we changed and cleaned out... still same issue...last time the car ran the car got hot, up to 250 but did not steam or boil over, just got hot, but after that is when the car started this issue with not running under a load...so now we are wondering if something happened internally to the motor, we missed the last race of the year so we are just going to tear down, and see what we can find...but thanks for the help and ideas... anybody on here know about the distributor for these things, is there a way to run one without the computer...

too bad 22dodge wasn't still on here. is the car actually flooding or just missing bad under a load? if you got it hot you may have glazed the plugs or damaged the wires. try some new plugs, check cam timing and ign timing.

Do a compression test and a leak down. I know many guys that have gone 250+ and not had trouble after. With the air cleaner offslowly bring the revs up and see if fuel starts to come out of the pump nozzle. Hold the throttle steady and just look with your eyes that will tell you if it is pullover. It was pretty common with the Dodge motors also. Could be the valve sprinds too.

ok so back to working on the car, we are looking to see if there is a way to run a stand alone distributor on the dodge charger, so that way we can remove the computer and wiring all together, does anybody know of a way to do this, also want to do this because their distributors and caps are getting harder to find, having to order them online now...

I had a daytona, and we ran a stock dist. and wired in a msd 6al and did away with the ECM, just go to msd web site and find the wiring diagram, worked for us.
