Thumbs up 604 Eng. in IMCA A Mods

Nice to see IMCA is going to allow the 604 in the A Mods without the claim provisions. Good move.NOW, how about a Ford and a Chrysler crate engine for the A Mods. Hope they don't waste too much time getting THIS job done.

Ford says there M-6007-D347SR* competes with the 604 crate, but it has a suggested retail @ $8,200, its also a 415 hp motor. So its close but why as a sanctioning body would IMCA want to mess with making sure 2 motors are competitive vs. the open motor.

The asphalt sanctionings have it all figured out with weight breaks. Don't know why IMCA or any other dirt sanctioning couldn't figure it out. They also make a 350 hp version to compete with the 602 but it has aluminum heads. The 604 weighs 375 lbs while the Ford weighs 431 lbs. So is 15hp really gonna offset the weight difference in engines? Maybe that's why Ford built it with the extra 15hp.

It's no different than spending more money on an open engine for durability, the Ford crate is built with better parts than the 604.

looks like you got it figured out. the reason there is no ford crate allowed it because the crate costs as much as an open engine. would be a pointless rule.

I am a little concerned, on asphalt these engines get a weight break to make up for the lack of power. I fail to see how a 3" spoiler will make up for 200hp. I would be in if it were 100-50lbs lighter with the crate but I am not sure about the spoiler only.

i wouldnt be concerned. imca has tested the motor and it won lots of races agianst open motors. i saw it race once this year and it was suprising how fast it was. also gotta remember the 604 has aluminum heads so you'll lose 50lbs of nose weight plus the spoiler.

You are right, the reason is the first 3 versions of the Ford motor failed, that I know of, and they ended up using aftermarket parts to keep them together. That is another reason some "Crate" classes dropped them, you would have to have 4 sets of rules to be able to run the 604 Chevy or the 3 different Fords. Ford was the original crate motor choice by FASTRAK but it was dropped because it was changed and the price was raised even before they even started selling them. Stan Lester had the original FORD crate until a few years ago and may still have it.
