Will a bronze gear work or is there a special gear I need just for a 604?

It will mechanically work for a while but will soon fail. You should use a melonized or hardened steel gear for a 604.

Get Melonized, Brass will get eaten and steel will eat the cam.

Does an MSD distibutor not come with the proper gear already installed?
